M9 and 12mm CV Heliar Superwide

I think the 12mm CV will be challenging to say the least on an M9 and I sold mine as I have a WATE and 16mm is about as wide as I need when I eventually get my M9 (the 12mm is a 16mm on the M8). I had a hard time getting good results on a M8. I had mine coded as a WATE and set it for 16mm. I also had a UV/IR filter (in the John Milich setup). This setup results in some dramatic cyan shifts in the corners. The lens vignettes on the M8 and will therefore also vignette and likely more on a FF sensor. I found vignetting even at f/11, though to some extent I was able to fix in ACR with its vignette tool. In addition I would say (admittedly unscientifically) that the 12mm is not as sharp as the CV 15mm, which I also previously owned, and which on a M9 would be a pretty wide lens. I'm not saying the 12mm is not usable, only that it is challenging. If you do get one because you have a compelling need to get that wide, I'd try it without the UV/IR filter first and I would definitely advise using Cornerfix, and definitely suggest you be ready for lots of PP.

I use the 12mm C/V a great deal on both the M8 & M9, metering works perfectly as with any other lens. I normally set exposure compensation to +1/3 or +2/3, in fact I do this on the WATE as well. I find it brings out more detail especially towards the edges.

The 12mm is not RF coupled which means you can't focus via the viewfinder and that you calculate your focusing via the aperture & focus scale on the lens. This is very easy to do as the lens has such a great depth of field.

I use both the 12mm & WATE without filters & with coding (lens recognition) off. I find that coding only increases the cyan drift as do the filters increase vignetting.

Have a look at this thread:

Sandy has just updated his Cornerfix program with version 1.3.0.1 available for download.

I've just downloaded and will run some pics through it later today.

Here's a shot I took with the 12mm C/V & M9, I don't think there's any problem with lack of detail or sharpness:

Oh and for a viewfinder I recommend you use your natural field of vision. They are very, very close.

Yes and no ;-)

I make two kinds of pictures, which are totally different.

Scenario 1

- I put a subject quite centrally. This is SUBJECT of a photo. Plus it surranding.

- I just make a photo of eg. landscape or even city - just from place where I stand.

In such cases - I absolutely do not need any viewfinder. Agree.

Scenario 2

- I have a subject, which I want to put into frame not centrally, but more in corner. And I do not want to cut it. I want to make sure, that eg. tree root, or bottle on the street - still is inside the frame, full, not cut.

Then viewfinder could be helpfull a lot. Unless I make tens of shots, observe LCD and reframe - what I want to avoid.

Don't you think so? ;-) Anyway, I do not have 12mm viewfinder, once I get lens, I will practise more, and maybe I will come to conlsuion, that even with scenario 2 I can manage it without too many test shots.

As I informed in M8 section, new 12mm is already available at eBay:

voigtlander 12mm II, Cameras Photo. Great deals on eBay!

Any recommendations about 12mm viewfinder?

I found one starting from 89 EUR up to 399 EUR...

Oooh, good news. I had one on pre-order with Steve Gandy. Hopefully it will show up soon. I just find the scale focus to be a bit annoying. I guess its just me, but having the RF patch off just bugs me.

As for the finder, I would recommend the new one that CV is coming out with. It sounds really good. I have one on order and will post my thoughts on it and the new lens when they arrive.

What you're calling 'distortion' is simply mismatch between taking perspective and viewing perspective.

Adjust your viewpoint to the same as the photographer's and the "distortion" disappears.

Same thing as what is sometimes called "collapsing of perspective" with long lenses.

Not a property of the lens, but of the difference between the way the image is viewed and the way it was taken.
