Mokkacream Posted October 16, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 16, 2009 I don't like this money bedding site.
JHAG Posted October 16, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted October 16, 2009 No. The man is too talkative.
Mokkacream Posted October 16, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 16, 2009 I know this site quite a while, because you will finally always linked to his site, as you try to look up something about photo equipment. He just comments on everything. When I read the Leica stuff in order to get some information prior to buying a M9, which I was very interested in (NB: I'm new to Leica and not a Leica-"Fan"), I asked myself: why does he now report about Leica? It doesn't fit to him at all. Just look at the "home" webpage: a self portrait with his automatic SLR shotgun. But the answer is quite simple: everybody tries to get every single information out of the web regarding the M9, which means a very good opportunity to get more site hits. And this is how he makes money. I don't appreciate this approach.
JHAG Posted October 16, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted October 16, 2009 Photo critics are a funny tribe : on one end, Erwin Puts, which is a technician, an expert, who, as every expert, can state quite uninteresting things for the photographer, using his deep know-how. On the other end, Rockwell, who's a billboard. To me, the only real photographer who's also a critic and a good technician is Sean Reid. He doesn't stuff you with technicalities you don't give a nickel about, and really learns you some stuff about your craft. Like some on this forum. Bixi Posted October 17, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 17, 2009 I like Thorsten Overgaard's Leica M9 page. I like the way how he writes.
stevem7 Posted October 17, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Rockwell reviewed the M9 before he even touched one. What does that tell you?
eddale Posted October 17, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 17, 2009 Which he disclosed!!!! I suspect Kens Humour is lost on some people... +1 forThorsten - loved that user review!
ulrikft Posted October 17, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 17, 2009 I dislike Ken Rockwell, as he is.. well, useless to me. People Like Bjorn Rorslett, Thom Hogan, Sean Reid etc.. far better!
MVMP Posted October 17, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 17, 2009 I think Ken is pretty good. His site has a tremendous range of information, and I like the way he cuts to the chase - nothing too fancy, just tells it like it is. I may not agree with his opinion across the board, but you have to admit he's got it right when it comes to the M9 (and, Leica in general). Besides, you can tell he really loves photography, and that is something we all have in common.
brt3 Posted October 17, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 17, 2009 I think you have to take Ken for what he is. HIs site is geared towards his very strong opinions on things, and I choose to treat it as both a source of entertainment AND information. If you understand his biases you can use that as a filter for the information. If some of his views seem inconsistent, then at least they are (often) entertainingly inconsistent. On the other hand, I can clearly see why people would prefer Messrs. Reichmann & Reid...
larryk34 Posted October 17, 2009 Share #12 Posted October 17, 2009 Ken Rockwell doesn't pretend he's writing anything but his own personal opinion, so it's easy to accept or reject as it is. Anyone is free to examine what he's talking about and reach their own conclusion. What he really seems to be doing is focusing attention on this and that as he sees fit. In the past, if you were a Nikon users, then he was a valuable source of new information. We'll see now what he has to say about Leica. If he discovers that the lenses are exceptional, how can anyone here argue with him?
JHAG Posted October 17, 2009 Author Share #13 Posted October 17, 2009 I like Thorsten Overgaard's Leica M9 page. I like the way how he writes. Thorsten is a truly refined photographer.
tgray Posted October 17, 2009 Share #14 Posted October 17, 2009 I agree with a lot of the comments above. Take him with a grain of salt and don't get too worked up by his style. He's got some valid points buried in there sometimes on stuff that I haven't seen on other sites. He talks about a huge range of stuff, so you can read his reviews relative to himself and others. I'm happy he writes stuff - it's another data point.
Mokkacream Posted October 17, 2009 Share #15 Posted October 17, 2009 I think Ken is pretty good. In begging money, yes. His site has a tremendous range of information, and even more "Help Ken" buttons. ... and I like the way he cuts to the chase - nothing too fancy, just tells it like it is. nothing more than personal opinions for people who don't have *. Besides, you can tell he really loves photography, and that is something we all have in common. So what?

Jeff S Posted October 17, 2009 Share #17 Posted October 17, 2009 I sent Ken an e-mail a while back, challenging some particularly inane comment. After a few back-and-forth exchanges, he wrote: "Remember, I kid about everything on my site." After that, I learned to just be amused rather than astounded by things he writes.
