bill Posted October 23, 2009 Share #21 Posted October 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good grief. All this soul-searching. Just buy a D-Lux 4 now. Use it happily. If the X1 meets or exceeds expectations when it is released, sell it and buy that. Any financial loss will be nugatory. Life's too short to agonise over these things. Think of the pictures you could have missed while titting about. Regards, Bill
Advertisement Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Hi bill, Take a look here Best Companion to an M: X1 or D-Lux 4?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
nugat Posted October 23, 2009 Share #22 Posted October 23, 2009 ...possibly, nugat, but last time I checked, a weekend movie did not cost GBP 499.99, or thereabouts. A metaphore, Aesop, your patron used them a lot. Ok, especially for you in the 500-1000GBP range: same way as buying a holiday in exotic countries...(although one has never been there before...) I just came back from lunch with a new D-Lux 4 in hand, fidgety controls and all. Battery is charging as I type this. Carpe diem! -Mike

I would *never* buy a camera without test-driving it. To me, it is a simple matter of common sense. That's all I'm saying to the OP - no movies, no holidays, no metaphors. Just my opinion, communicated clearly.

No shame about that, the beauty is in diversity. I bought all my cameras without test driving them. I do not know how I could sensibly test drive MP, M6, CL, M8, RD1 and scores of non-RF, without taking them home, playing for days, developing the film or raws and printing. Alas, I was never offered the luxury.
Guest stnami Posted October 24, 2009 Share #27 Posted October 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I doubt if any of the digital M s would make the grade as a companion to the X1
wilfredo Posted October 24, 2009 Share #28 Posted October 24, 2009 My feeliing is that a companion to an M8 is truly a personal matter, we can all offer suggestions but we all have unique individual needs and nothing, no formula will work universally for everyone. I'm sure the X-1 will be a great performer but what would be the point of having a camera with one fixed focal length lens to use as a companion to the M8? Most of the time I keep the 35mm Cron on my M8, so a companion for me would be something with a little more versatility where I wouldn''t have to be changiing lenses. I'm not keen at all with the way Leica prices it's new products. Personally I feel the X1 is over-priced. For a little more you could purchase a second M8 on the used market and put your second favorite lens on it. Just this past week I purchased a used D2, only $600.00. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/103377-d2-dominates-conversation.html I'm just as excited about it as if it were the latest thing to hit the markets. Unless you have money to splurge, if all you want is something you can slip into a pocket, then I would go with the D-Lux 4.
wilfredo Posted October 24, 2009 Share #29 Posted October 24, 2009 Mike, Looking back at this thread I see you opted for the D-Lux 4. Have fun with it and post some shots. I'm sure your wallet is relieved :-).
