Steel Grey Conundrum

I'm getting depressed by Rick's register, which currently shows only 4 Steel Grey models out of ~50 M9's that are in the database.

I'm first in line at my local dealer but have specified the Grey color. Two black models have come in and have gone to fellows below me on the list who either preferred black, or didn't care.

My M6, M7, and M8 are all silver chrome - a color which matches well with my mix of both black and silver lenses. And so my preference for the Grey color on my soon to be (or not soon to be!) M9. Alas, I'm now having second thoughts, given the apparent paucity of shipping Grey models. I'm wondering if a black M9 sometime reasonably soon isn't better than a Grey one many weeks or months away?

Anyone have a pic of a black M9 with a silver lens mounted they could share?

I too prefer Chrome M cameras but with the M9 I would go black for a couple of reasons. The covering used on the grey model is the same as the original M8. Which IMHO is the worst covering ever used on any camera ever made.

Secondly the grey is not chrome, it is paint/lacquer. Because of this I really don't think it will match to well with chrome lenses, if that is important to you, and that when it wears it could become a ugly combination, grey with brass edges. More so then black with brass edges.

Yes but!:) According to the Portugal production figures they are up to about ~1300 cameras by now and Rick only has 50 reported and plotted so far.

Stick to your guns, grey folks!

Don't buy any of the cameras that we black camera buyers want:D

Also remember Leica manufactures in runs, so far Australia has only gotten black units... I'd imaging Leica manufactured a good mix of colours for promo/press/demo, any surplus was shipped to customers. This possibly explains the scarcity of Grey units, but I imagine the next big shipment to Aus will be grey, I am top of the list in the entire country of Australia for grey :p Don't give up hope! I've seen it with chrome lenses and it looks great. As for the covering, either get camera leather griptac or put it in a half-case.

Can we have some verifiable sources to back this up?

I am under the impression that that only @ 100x M9s have shipped world-wide so far...

I guess I have to open an auction for my Steel Grey M9, and change a couple of silver lenses too... :)

The Gray seems a rare beast here.

Anyway, it looks absolutely great with silver lenses too! Even if the grey is slightly different from the silver/chrome M8, IMO, it's much more "elegant".

According to my information, Leica is currently manufacturing roughly 60 M9 cameras per day. Demand, especially initial demand, is strong, so it may take a while until all backorders have been taken care of.

I thought I saw a comment from someone at Leica in one of the interviews reported here, that Leica is 'reconsidering the steel-grey finish'?

In that case - the steel grey model may become the first really collectible digital M :)

Interesting how varied taste preferences can be.

I find the glossy black covering on the black M9 perfectly horrible both to look at and handle. I wouldn’t have it in the house. The smoother covering on the steel grey camera is more to my liking. Granted, the black model looks more modern and business-like but the steel grey hints at cameras as they used to be when I got my first one. Thanks to Leica, nostalgia isn't what it used to be - it's better.

To my eye the grey does go well with chrome lenses. Obviously, they are not the same colour as the grey paint but they don’t conflict and the dials on the top of the camera do pick up the chrome. It looks better in fact than in theory.

I would like to know where "here" is and where you get the M9 for that price, i.e., EUR 1000 below retail price

The retail price including VAT at the shop in Viennal was EUR 5496.
