Can magnets harm the M8 or the lenses ?

Hi, I wouldn't think that the magnets used in such devices are strong enough to cause any problems to the M8. Many small bags for compact cameras contain magnetic closures. Having a metal body, the M8 is also quite well shielded in that respect. I would advise against storing spare memory cards in very close proximity to the catches, but otherwise I would think that you have nothing to fear from them. :)

back 3 years ago i received a c-lux1 for my birthday from my wife. i wore glasses with a magnetic clip on sunglass attachment.

well, i took off the sunglass clip and put it in my shirt pocket next to the clux- it ended up cracking the LCD and making the camera unoperable. off to NJ it went

Not even memory cards are affected by magnets.

Maybe I'm showing my age. My knowledge comes from the days of Ferrite Core memory blocks and bulk eraser magnets for tape reels. :o

(And when 'Solid-state' meant it was too heavy to move!)

Sorry to disappoint you, Nicole, :o but the body shells are made from magnesium, which is a non-ferrous metal with high magnetic reluctance and low permeability, so unfortunately it would give next to no electromagnetic shielding. :(

Yeah, you could do real damage with a magnet back then … Flash memory (EEPROM) stores data by trapping electrons between insulating layers. Magnets could induce a current, but only within an electric conductor which flash memory is not. Not without an operating voltage of a couple of volts allowing data to be written or erased.

It's a bit like saying a slice of lemon can curdle milk, so I'd better not put any in a gin and tonic <grin>.

Does this mean that my M8 will not survive an EMP? And they told me that Leica cameras are 'bombproof' I shall write a stiff letter to customer services. (Now, where did my portable Faraday cage go....)

Thanks MJH. Yes, we had fun with magnets back then.

I never put milk in my G&T. :D

Oh well, at least I still was correct in advising the OP not to worry about small magnets on camera bags. And I learned a few things too. I love this forum. :)

I could not agree more, Nicoleica :-)

Nicole,

Unfortunately you're M8 wouldn't survive an EMP but that's okay because neither would your PC so you wouldn't have anything to look at your photos on anyway. Neither would your bank ... or its records about all the millions you've saved over the years. :(

In the good old days you had to be careful not to leave an exposure meter (or a camera with one built in) near the compass or you could go way off course. I guess the same would go for the little strong magnets they now use in bag clasps.

GPS has taken all the fun out of navigation.

Luckily the gin should come through just fine!...
