Yarosuav Posted April 8, 2013 Share #1 Posted April 8, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've had my new chrome M for a couple weeks now and loving it. No issues whatsoever. One thing that bothers me a little is battery drain in standby. I have the camera set to auto power off after 2 minutes. However, if I don't manually switch the camera off, it seems to drain the battery pretty fast even after auto power off. I left it overnight with the battery at 75% and it was completely depleted in the morning. The power off definitely works, as the frame lines in viewfinder disappear and it takes a second to wake the camera up after it powers itself off. For those who are interested, I was out in relatively cold weather (40 degrees F) last week for about three hours. Based on the number of exposures, I calculated that I would be able to shoot over 1,200 images before draining the battery. I did not use live view. The results I quoted were from trials conducted over 5 days. The % never moved unless I used the camera. Left on continuously it drained at 5%/hour. What I'm going to do is leave it fully charged overnight on the desk (not in the camera) and see what happens. chris_tribble Posted April 9, 2013 Share #9 Posted April 9, 2013 My experience with two bodies & 3 batteries is that when the camera is off (in Auto or Manually) there is zero drain. Sometimes the camera will not power itself off, even though it's set to power off after two minutes. When I look through the VF after not touching the camera for some time, the meter is still on (the shutter speed is displayed and reacts to changes in light). I'm puzzled... Each profile setting can include changes in all the menu options ..... including file numbering, folder settings etc....... and probably power off settings too..... Sometimes it does go sleep but sometimes it stays on (and I can see the meter working in the VF). Have no idea why it happens. I did think my battery was not holding much of a charge, but that was a false alarm as after 3 charges it holds the charge a VERY long time. At $190 for an extra battery I am delighted with its performance so instead of getting two extra batteries I will only get one extra when available. As an aside, I am using EVF and FP much of the time as I am using R lenses a lot like 85% of the time. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I realized that the issue was not just the camera not going to sleep, but also the light meter and LED framelines staying on (which obviously drains the battery really fast). I left the camera alone for three hours today and when I looked through the VF (making sure I didn't touch the camera) I noticed the framelines were on and the shutter speed was displayed, meaning that the meter was still working. According to the manual both should should have turned off after 30 seconds since last shutter press to conserve battery... Long story short, knowing that any issues with a Leica must surely be related to SD cards (I'm only half kidding) I swapped my Sandisk Extreme Pro to an old 4GB Transcend Class 4... ...Surprise, surprise, the meter now turns off after 30 seconds each and every time and the camera goes to sleep as it should... Seriously, I have no idea how an SD card could affect the camera behavior like this. The reason I thought it could be related to the SD card is because I noticed once the SD card light coming on when the camera was just sitting idly on my desk for some time and should have powered itself off long time ago... Yesterday it was at about 75%, and look what greeted me on this otherwise fine Sunday morning I don't think it is related to the SD card, as this is the first time this happens, and I have had the camera for over a week using just this card all the time. But I confess I had forgotten to flip the switch to OFF the evening before, so it seems to be something fishy with the auto-OFF function. I keep it set at the default value; 2 minutes. Just for the record, the SD card is a SanDisk Extreme 32 Gb, 45Mb/s Welcome, dear visitor! wlaidlaw Posted April 14, 2013 Share #20 Posted April 14, 2013 Here is a suggestion: Is it the new shutter release with its weather sealing that is staying depressed just enough to keep the camera awake. This might explain why mine did this a couple of times in the first week but now that it has had a few hundred actuations, it is not doing it any more.
