New PART 2 of the "Leica M Type 240 for Video & Filmmaking" article. With test footage to download, short test documentary by Austrian videographer Johnnie Behiri and how to use the camera and edit the footage:

"One of the qualities of using a Leica M Type 240 for still photography is that you use the best lenses money can buy. Wide open at f/0.95, f/1,4 and f/2,0 they perform so well must often dry our eyes and thank the lens designer Peter Karbe in our prayers."

Enjoy!

Did Leica Camera f... up?

In my opinon, short and simply yes.

Given that Video and Live View were major selling points when Leica announced the new M, it seems odd that the prototypes were supplied to a group of still's photographers that repeatedly apologised for their lack of competency to test video.

Thorsten, wow, that was excellent. I enjoyed the overview from a professionals view point as well as the specific information on how to use the M for video.

It sounds like the M and the Leica lenses may never be used much for serious videography but, HDSLRs are not really considered by most professional videographers either. It also sounds like the M seems to have some short comings that may not make it the best choice for HDSLR movie work.

I also agree that this iteration of M video may be best suited to the consumer or the pro still photographer that just needs some short video clips. Which is fine.

And, it does seem that one of the big questions you point out for those of us with other professions is, why? Do we really want to commit ourselves to more gear, education, software, complexity of life and huge amounts of time editing family and holiday video? I don't even have enough time to get the all of the good photographs I've taken printed.

This was a bit of a revelation for me. I can see that it will be fun to play with and I'll definitely shoot some video while on holidays, but I'm not going to let myself get into this whole video editing time sink hole. Thanks for that.

But, M video will be fun to play around with and show on the big screen in the home theater for grins. Still glad Leica added it. I'm sure the implementation will get better as Leica goes forward with the M. But, I think I see what you mean, it will always be what it is - a still camera with video.

Luckily, it doesn't seem like Leica has sacrificed any of the basic ideals of the M camera at the video alter. Thanks again for excellent piece.

ps It may be that smarter for some of us to give our video to a local editing company and have them make our holiday productions once in a while.

Maybe, to the degree that you shoot videos using a tripod, since there is no image stabilization for handheld video shooting.

Thorsten, very interesting review: great idea to collaborate with the professional videographer.

Thorsten - my thanks also.

My one word of encouragement is that if you're taking a tripod on an assignment (which I would usually do) and you need to shoot short video interview "talking headf" clips as part of the assignment (which I frequently have to do) then the M works very well (at least as well as my 5D2 - and better than my iphone :)). This means that rather than having to take MORE equipment with me when I travel, I'll be able to take LESS!

On assignments in future I'll be taking 2 M bodies + M lenses from 18 through to 135 + an R 80-200 f4 + EVF and MIC adaptors + a long lead for interview microphone (or wireless set up). Much better than having to carry the M system AND a 5D mk2 + 70-200 + 24-70.

Yes, for sure I would use a tripod or tabletop tripod. I think Thorsten's review shows that the M is capable of really good video. As Chris mentioned he is getting video comparable to his 5 dII. So, the M will produce good video. Question for most is, do we really want to get heavily into all of this?

Thanks Thorsten. Your comments seem to reinforce my desire that Leica allow the M button the option to be reassigned to a different function, like exposure lock.

I'm ok with your suggestion. But, if you want 'exposure lock' why not just shoot in "Manual" mode, would speed be the advantage?

Yes, speed is the advantage. When shooting with the EVF in A Mode you cannot use focus aid (5x and 10x zoom and peaking) with an exposure locked in, so you must first focus, then lock an exposure and shoot, which can result in more OOF shots with movement.

When shooting in Manual mode with the EVF the electronic viewfinder slightly blocks the shutter dial so you cannot glance at your set speed, and when using the EVF in Manual Mode you must have the full display on to get exposure information, which substantially clutters and blocks the view for composition.

There seems to be a lot of discussion that the M240 is meant to be used as a rangefinder most of the time, and that the EVF is only meant for wide landscape shots and other times when you are not in a hurry. As the firmware stands now this is true, but with a few simple changes it could be much, much quicker. I still prefer the rangefinder, but in low light and with fast lenses like the Noctilux the EVF is a marvel.
