scott kirkpatrick Posted March 20, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 20, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Let's see if this one can be nailed (or will go away). In the very long 1.16 thread, several owners reported seeing seeing the red LED flash on the back of the camera when they pressed the shutter, even though the camera should have been off. One person indicated that he thought his camera wasn't shutting down properly as evidenced by the battery running down. Let's see if those who have this problem can present a way of producing it, on their cameras at least, so that it can be addressed. I can't reproduce it on an M9 or on three M8's (late model classic, early M8, now upgraded, and M8.2), but here's what I tried. Pick up camera after an hour or more on the shelf, switched off. Press shutter button Switch on, review last image, press info, switch off. Press shutter button multiple times during the next 10-20 seconds. No blinking LEDs in response to a shutter press in all of this. What do others see? scott

Danno_photoguy Posted March 20, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 20, 2010 I do get a blinking LED with the M9 off. I just pulled it out of my photo bag (has not been on for 3 days), hit the shutter and the red LED flashes. Dan

Danno_photoguy Posted March 20, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 20, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I should say that although I have the blinking, I do not know if it is impacting the battery life. I don't think it is. I was going to ask the leica people about it at next week's Leice roadshow in NY city. Dan
35mmSummicron Posted March 20, 2010 Share #8 Posted March 20, 2010 My My has done this camera-off-light thing since I got it (fw 1.002) and still with fw1.116. I'm not noticing any sigificant power drain. To me, this feels like a firmware bug and I'm not particularly concerned or bothered by it. My M8 classic of 3yrs does not exhibit this. meino Posted March 20, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 20, 2010 Blinking red LED, camera sat switched off for about 7 hours. Blinking red LED. Blinking red LED, always. Was it realy off using the switch, or was it off by the auto-off setting. When I don't physically switch off the M9, and when I start it by touching the release, the led blinks. Howerver when it was physically switched of, it will blink the led when it is switched on but not on the succesive touch of the release button. Guest WPalank Posted March 20, 2010 Share #11 Posted March 20, 2010 My camera hasn't been on since yesterday. I pulled it out of the bag and pushed the shutter button. No blinking LED. I turned the camera on, played around in the menu a little turned it off. Pushed Shutter button, still no blinking LED.
k-hawinkler Posted March 20, 2010 Share #12 Posted March 20, 2010 Good question. Was it realy off using the switch, Yes.or was it off by the auto-off setting. No. I have "Auto power off" set to "Off" and always physically switch off my M9 between taking pictures. When I don't physically switch off the M9, and when I start it by touching the release, the led blinks. I just tried this scenario (having temporarily set "Auto power off" to "1 min."). The led blinks. However when it was physically switched off, it will blink the led when it is switched on. Correct. The red led blinks. However when it is physically switched off, it will not blink on the succesive touch of the release button. Mine does. However, I just noticed that sometimes I have to wait just a second or 2 before I get a blink. After that, I get a blink every time. Also, this blink is fairly short compared to the switching on blink. In the end, this behavior has no relevance for my use of the M9 as it doesn't seem to adversely affect the battery charge. Now, I better go outside and take some nice shots. Cheers, K-H.
thrice Posted March 21, 2010 Share #13 Posted March 21, 2010 My camera has always done this, since FW 1.002 (shipping fw). Just pulled it out of the camera bag, it's still switched to off, press the shutter button, one blink from the LED. I'm currently running 1.116. eric_bowles Posted March 21, 2010 Share #14 Posted March 21, 2010 Over the years, I've owned a number of units (2 x M8, 2 x M8.2, 1 x M9) and I've had one M8.2 that had the same symptoms: after power-off, press shutter, SD access light blinks, and removing the base plate triggers a warning. In my case, if I pressed the shutter while the power was off, the unit wouldn't respond even if I switched the power on again -- it was competely unresponsive -- and the only recourse was to take the battery out. Since I detected this behavior just after receiving it, I sent it back to the dealer for a replacement M8.2, which works as expected.

meino Posted March 21, 2010 Share #17 Posted March 21, 2010 Maybe a strange question, but because the blinking led signals card access, what kind of cards are we using. I have no blinking led's in the described scenario, but I'm only using Sandisk UltraII (15mbs.) 16Gb cards.
