Random Play back issues

Only time I've seen that is when I use a card that had been in a different "Leica" (M8, DMR, D'Lux, D2) and forgot to run a format on it before using it in the M9. And the only affected images were the left-over images from the "other" camera.

All digital Leicas use the same basic file structure - a "Leica" folder inside a "DCIM" folder. So if you move a card from camera to camera without deleting - or preferably formatting - to kill out the old images, the M9 will try to read them, but fail (since the file size/shape is wrong) and give you the file number instead.

If you are sure the images that display this way really are M9 images - then something else is going on that I have not experienced.

I get this ALL the time.

I only format incamera and use Sandisk Extreme III 8gig SDHC cards (though it doesn't seem to make a difference if I use my older Ultra II's either)

doesn't seem to actually affect any of the recorded images, just scroll to a previous image and then back.

Firmware bug for sure.

hope this helps.

I have experienced this (and can replicate it) in the following circumstances: I shoot some images and open them in Adobe Bridge, and do some preliminary tweaking in ACR. The card is not nearly filled so I subsequently pop it back in my camera. Any files that were opened in ACR will no longer open on the camera. The DNG is there but some bits must have been added. If the file is not opened in ACR, simply displaying it in Bridge has no effect on the file's viewability in the camera. I have not used any other editor or raw developer. I am assuming that copying the files to a temp directory before doing any work will avoid it.

If this is not what is happening to you, then obviously the problem is different.

hmmm...that could be it. I'll pay more attention, but I do that all the time (pulling card and looking at images, then return card to M9).

Same with me. Again, there's no impact to the images on the card. when you see the black screen, just scroll to a previous image, then back. All is well again.....

I guess that explains why I've never come across it myself - I can't conceive of opening images directly from the card. I just drag-and-drop the Leica folder to my desktop.

Technical explanation makes sense, though. If you must view directly from the card, I believe clicking "Cancel" rather than "Done" in Camera Raw when exiting the image will avoid making changes to the image file.

Well, under normal circumstances I wouldnt do this either...but the m9 is brand new, so im still in the testing phases. Im not concerned about backing up, just reviewing what i just shot to get used to the camera. If it was an important set of images it would be backed-up first.

Scrolling back to a previous image, then back again does not change the blank image for me.

I often get this black image with the file no. in the middle. If I recall correctly I've noticed it when I've delete pictures off the camera using the delete button, and not having formatted the card in camera.
