GavinM Posted June 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear Forum I have just become the very proud owner of an M8.2 & Summarit 75, after reading the manual a couple of times I am concerned (hopefully not) that the camera maybe faulty. After turning the camera on in Snapshot mode pressing the info button brings no response, I understood that I am supposed to see a schematic of the lens and be given the options to make some settings ?. Any advice gratefully received with thanks

plasticman Posted June 24, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 24, 2009 I believe this is only with lenses under and including 35mm.

GavinM Posted June 24, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted June 24, 2009 Thank you very much, I had hoped that it was such a limitation rather than a fault, however try as I might I could not find a reference addressing this in the guide. Other than that I am simply blown away by the quality and the absolute joy of driving a real camera again.

plasticman Posted June 24, 2009 Share #6 Posted June 24, 2009 try as I might I could not find a reference addressing this in the guide. I think this has been a general criticism - maybe Leica could've been more clear in their documentation. But the important part is that you'd never want to use that mode anyway, and your joy using the camera will be multiplied many times totally ignoring the S setting forever. Marquinius Posted June 24, 2009 Share #7 Posted June 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Gavin, Please please please, stop worrying and start shooting and sharing photos! Most of us M8 (sorry, no .2 for me) owners are SO into grumbling and searching for faults, I sometimes think we are all masochists. So: put the camera in front of your eyes, think about aperture and speed, focus and click. You'll be amazed: this expensive thing works. really. Then: post it on the forum and experience the fun and warmth of this magnificent group of leica nuts. Welcome, really!
plasticman Posted June 24, 2009 Share #8 Posted June 24, 2009 Please please please, stop worrying and start shooting and sharing photos! Most of us M8 (sorry, no .2 for me) owners are SO into grumbling and searching for faults... I think what Gavin was doing was entirely rational and not grumbling, at all. The manual has been criticized for being opaque regarding this matter, and Gavin came to the forum looking for advice. He seems quite happy with the information he received. My goodness, even totally legitimate questions are pounced on by the evangelists as 'grumbling' or 'whining'. How defensive can you get??
SJP Posted June 24, 2009 Share #9 Posted June 24, 2009 Welcome to the forum & enjoy your new toy!!! This Leica stuff is addictive & I consider getting an M8 one of my smarter moves in recent times. Also be prepared for a learning curve, it took me a couple of weeks to really start to figure out what was going on and even now this device can really amaze me (and others). It can also be very frustrating, which is part of the fun I guess.
GavinM Posted June 25, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted June 25, 2009 My thanks again to all, simply wanted to check that I hadn't missed something. Indeed the mode will not be used a lot, if one had wanted a point and squirt device the M8 would obviously not have been the choice. Nevertheless should I witness Bin Laden and friend, sharing a cigar with the top down on the Ferrari it just might get me a better picture in the seconds available. Until then I am and shall continue to enjoy the learning curve and this most helpful forum.

My goodness, even totally legitimate questions are pounced on by the evangelists as 'grumbling' or 'whining'. How defensive can you get?? I'm sorry if that was the message coming across! Never even thought of Gavin grumbling: thought along the lines of someone getting lost in our forum (where, you'll have to admit) a lot of time is spent on technicalities. Starting the adventure from that point would be a shame, as the M8 is so much fun. So apologies to Gavin and yourself.
plasticman Posted June 25, 2009 Share #13 Posted June 25, 2009 I'm sorry if that was the message coming across! Never even thought of Gavin grumbling: thought along the lines of someone getting lost in our forum (where, you'll have to admit) a lot of time is spent on technicalities. Fair enough. I think the forum can be a lot of fun, but it's also a resource when trouble strikes. And let's be honest, it's also a great medium for letting off steam when things go wrong. Some people like to call that 'whining'. I see it as a useful way to keep companies on their toes. I'm sure Gavin is gonna have a blast with his camera.
