pgk Posted February 29, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 29, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use 'Arca style' tripod quick release plates on my Canons (by Kirk and RRS). Currently the plates available from such manufacturers for the M8 are 'generic' in that they seem designed to fit a variety of cameras. Paradoxically I would say that the M8 could lend itself to a low profile, neat and light 'L' plate but no one is building one as yet. Does anyone have a solution or know of anyone who might be prepared to machine up such an 'L' plate? Currently I have a series of components which give an 'L' plate configuration but it is far from neat. Thanks in advance.
Advertisement Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Hi pgk, Take a look here Arca type tripod plates for M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pthompson Posted February 29, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 29, 2008 Kirk makes a beautifully machined base plate specifically for the M8 - no L bracket out yet to my knowledge...
rickp13 Posted February 29, 2008 Share #3 Posted February 29, 2008 have a second look in the Really Right Stuff catalog or website, and you'll find this generic L plate called MC-L. RRS recommend it for the leica M8, and i can confirm that it mounts and works very well, as with the other RRS plates and clamps i've owned. i paid $105 plus shipping. good luck rick Welcome, dear visitor! pgk Posted February 29, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted February 29, 2008 Thanks but I have a RRS small plate plus the L plate from RRS. What I really menat was a smaller L plate which was low profile and could be left on the camera without fouling the strap (as the RRS plate does. peter_n Posted February 29, 2008 Share #5 Posted February 29, 2008 Wimberley makes the P-5 Camera Body Plate which looks like it would work for the M8.
Jack_Flesher Posted February 29, 2008 Share #6 Posted February 29, 2008 In addition to the L plate shown above, I use the RRS BP-CS baseplate as my "normal" plate. Here is a clickable thumb showing both. Note I keep the L plate on my standard base and the regular plate on my grip base: Cheers,
pthompson Posted February 29, 2008 Share #7 Posted February 29, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here's a couple of shots of the Kirk plate - note that the plate is deeper than the camera base only by a miniscule amount...enough to allow for a lip front and back to eliminate twisting without having to overtighten. Looks good, works good - I never take it off. If they would apply the same care to an L bracket I would be even happier. Welcome, dear visitor! pgk Posted March 1, 2008 Author Share #8 Posted March 1, 2008 Thanks all. Its very useful to have seen all these options although I'd still like something slightly lower profile and which will fit with the strapson, so I'll see if I can get a local engineering firm interested. I like the idea of the spare baseplate (grip version) though as this could prove useful with an L bracket on for when I know I need vertical and horizontal shots on the tripod. Many thanks.
