What a surprise - Leica 135 Apo-Telyt vs. Canon 70-200

I'm sorting some kit out for a two day shoot next week - and trying not to have to hump a tripod around as I'm using public transport (forget using cars in Central London...). I have a light Velbon monopod + Manfrotto monopod head and decided to test the M8 and Canon 5D with my longest lenses (135 on Leica - effective 180mm & and the Canon 70-200 - I've got the 200 2.8 prime, but not with me).

Using the monopod I tried both in poor artificial light (low-energy bulb in the lamp) just using AWB and correcting in LR. Both lenses were used at maximum aperture (f3.5 vs f2.8) - images below are Leica first set - full frame + 100% crop / Canon second set. I was surprised:

1/ as you can see below, the Leica seems to give a narrower FOV than the Canon at 200 - anyone with thoughts on this?

2/ using the monopod, I was holding the smaller Leica package more easily than the Canon + seemed to be getting more in-focus shots. OK, it's a non-moving subject etc, but for the kind of work I do, that's often not an image - observe, wait for the moment of stillness, shoot. Leica's are good at that.

3/ image wise at 320 the M8 holds up well against the 5D at 400 - although the extra resolution the Canon gives is clear on the 100% crop ...

4/ I really need to dust that radio!!

So whenever anyone says you can't use the 136 Apo Telyt on the M8, tell them you can!

Leica shots - full frame and crop first, followed by Canon. Leica shots, no sharpening, Canon

Hey Chris, really interesting stuff....

The last wedding I did I shot almost identical pictures with the M8 and Noctilux at 1.2 and the R 80 with an adapter on the 5d at 1.6 and the resemblance among lenses and overall look is astonishing.

Now I know why I love the R80 ;)

In fact, the M8 was a little crisper, more like a DMR shot, even with the Nocti and less resolution, but the two systems are completely comparible. Given how really good the 5d is, as an overall performer, that's saying a lot, IMO.

I keep on being surprised by this lens. The sheep "portraits" were all with the 135 Apo Telyt - other shots with the 28 Cron Asph. The English Lake District

This combination is now my default walking setup - I use a LowePro waist bag + lens pouch and it covers pretty well everything + is really light and compact to carry.
