jlindstrom Posted December 29, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 29, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) As some of you may remember, I purchased a 2nd hand M8 in november (from a reputable Leica dealer in Finland). As soon as I got it home, turned out it was one of the early batch of M8's with the dreaded "purple line problem". I immediately contacted the dealer & Leica about it and the camera was sent to Solms for maintenance. It spent some 3 weeks on the trip and I finally (as we all know, when waiting for something time feels much longer) before Christmas. What a nice present.. Anyway, today I got a copy of the service order from the dealer. I requested it out of curiosity.. On top of the CCD-change (the warranty job) they'd done a lot of extra work! They had also done a complete CLA for the camera. Adjusting and cleaning the rangefinder and everything else. AND on top of that, the whole camera now has a full 1 year Leica warranty. How nice is that!! This has turned out to be the best camera purchase ever for me. For the price of a typical 2nd hand M8 (typical in Finland) I got a model that just over 160 frames shot before me, it's now been fully cleaned & adjusted, faulty parts replaced and is under full factory warranty for a year. Ofcourse due to low usage before, the camera is in a 100% mint condition. That's like having bought a brand new camera! Just wanted to send much kudos to Leica for a great service. //Juha

ottocrat Posted December 29, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 29, 2009 Terrific story, great testimonial, nice to hear! It's really reassuring to hear how well they look after owners, even those who bought second-hand.
jsrockit Posted March 18, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 18, 2010 I have to hand it to Leica as well. My M8, no warranty, had shutter issues and needed a shutter replacement. They are doing it at about half the cost and the bumped up the service time.

SO I CAN SECOND YOUR POST! If anyone is thinking about getting a second hand M8, hope this will be a positive read Yes they have troubles and yes sending them to Solms takes time, but the service beats just about anything else in the camera world. mabelsound Posted March 19, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 19, 2010 I had excellent service from Leica NJ. Sensor replacement under warranty, they did the CLA and RF adjustment without being asked and sent the camera back 2 months earlier than promised. ilhan Posted March 19, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 19, 2010 I also have good experiences with service from Solms. Had several cameras serviced and got them returned all back in perfect state. With my M8, which was a factory demo with full factory warranty, things were a bit difficult. The camera arrived with a "sticky" shutter release button and after using it for 3 months (hoping it would go away) I returned it to my dealer in Holland. Leica identified the problem but refused to fix it under warranty at first. It was after lots of pressure from the Dutch distributer Transcontinenta and my dealer Henny Hoogeveen Photography in Noordwijk (a very recommendable international dealer) that Leica repaired the camera under warranty. The camera has been delivered in perfect order and with a new 8.2 shutter, CAL plus one year warranty. Thanks to Solms technicians and Leica service department who gave in to pleads from my dealer. M8 with 2.8 Elmarit accompany me all over the world.
piblondin Posted March 19, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 19, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good to hear there's hope for my camera yet. I sent it in in January for the purple line problem and they fixed everything but the lines a couple weeks ago. So, it's on it's way back again. alecgold Posted March 20, 2010 Share #8 Posted March 20, 2010 I have had fast responses from customer service in Germany. bought a Demo M8 and couldn't register. Send an email, they asked for the serial-thing with barcodes and cleared the serial number so I could register and claim my precious two IR-filters. And that all in one workday. My camera had made 2504 pictures before I got it, but it's in pristine shape. Said to have been refurbished and I got the 2 year warranty as well. It's just that I want the full (sapphire, framelines and shutter) update, but not wait two year to make the most of the 1 year warranty after the upgrade But as far as I can tell, CS in Solms is great! marknorton Posted March 21, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 21, 2010 Good to hear. I'm convinced that early cameras which go through the current alignment/setup process come back transformed. Leica have learned a huge amount about building the Digital M since 2006.
