colonel Posted February 26, 2014 Share #1 Posted February 26, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, as an amateur amateur, who just shoots for fun, I have now had the M240 for just over a month. I tend to shoot urban and landscape with a bit of people on a daily basis during my lunchtime walks. A bit more on the weekend and a whole lot more on holidays, especially landscape and people. I tend to have a main camera for a lengthy period but then reach a need to change and go through this odd merry go round of trying everything reasonable on the market. I guess I don’t totally trust reviews and try to gauge the handling and IQ for myself. I left the M9 about 9 months ago and did not find anything satisfactory to replace it, until a chance for a M240 came up ..... I only shoot raw (sorry, can’t comment on jpg) and for my uses I put major store, in terms of camera output, in the follow: 1. Enough DR to correct significant areas of the photo by many stops 2. Good colours. This is representing well what I see at the time, rather then correcting to some theoretical average. Its important the white balance deals with substantially all the colours, rather then having to muck around individually, e.g. the sunrise made it golden here, so I wanted to see golden: 3. Pixel level sharpness (yes, I’m one of those ….) However handling and feel of the camera is very important. I want: a. To be excited to pick it and generally like having it around me b. Controls must be fast and easy to operate c. The camera must feel right. Read size, grip, materials used, etc. Lets start with colours. The M240 combined with the Leica lenses I am using (all ASPH) have well saturated but neutral colours. This is excellent and better then the slightly over egged colours of the Sony and Fuji sensors I have used recently. In addition the M240 does not let one set of saturations in a photo effect another area. B&W rendition is very important to me. A good mid-range of tones is important:
Advertisement Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Hi colonel, Take a look here M240 - Amateur impressions. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
colonel Posted February 26, 2014 Author Share #2 Posted February 26, 2014 The camera must be fast to use. I like that most of what you need can be set before the camera is on. I have no speed issues vis-à-vis a typical AF camera when I need to move fast: Focus even with small DOF is fast: BTW LV when the lens is wide open is very fast to use: Can’t mention a Leica without mentioning sharpness at f1.4 of course:
colonel Posted February 26, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted February 26, 2014 The improvement in quietness of the shutter is greatly appreciated: Specular highlights are dealt with very well: Long exposure calculations work well: Fine detail is retained very well:
colonel Posted February 26, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted February 26, 2014 The new shutter is very smooth in operation. Even 1/15 works sometimes (i.e. produces as sharp as I need): Again, just to show that speed of operation is very fast even when focusing wide open. No one can accuse me of getting a baby to stay still !!!: So I think my conclusion is a hug for the M240 best rgds

chris_tribble Posted February 26, 2014 Share #13 Posted February 26, 2014 I see Jaap's point, but I also thought that this was a very telling mini-review. Pictures being worth several thousand words as we know Harold - thanks for the comments + for the fresh take on areas that are close to my end of town! zlatkob Posted February 26, 2014 Share #14 Posted February 26, 2014 In the last photo, the lamp posts seem to have dark halos around them, especially the one on the left, near the top. I assume that's from post-processing, not from the camera.

South Bird Posted February 27, 2014 Share #16 Posted February 27, 2014 Excellent real world review and great pictures. It was more effective than some long dense reviews in conveying the experience of the camera.
algrove Posted February 27, 2014 Share #17 Posted February 27, 2014 Excellent real world review and great pictures. It was more effective than some long dense reviews in conveying the experience of the camera. +1 to that. And OP thanks for the good read. I can understand Jaap's comments. Guess faster smartphones/tablets are needed since erl complained about that on another thread this week. Maybe the T is for that purpose=tablet.
