Cant get past my R50/1.4

Sure the M ASPH are more ... something but ...

...in the last 3 months, I've more or less abandoned my 50 M-Summilux ASPH for the pre-asph. I shoot strictly B&W film and definitely prefer the >10" X 8"prints from the pre-asph. :)

... There are not so many Leica lenses that is WORTH to throw away...

...agreed, Luigi - I have no plans to get rid of my grossly under-used 50 ASPH. Perhaps when I start shooting colour or digital, it will come into its own. Until then, the pre-asph will be favoured. :)

Quick question from me - I've been looking at a 50mm pre-ASPH Summicron as my first piece of glass for my recently acquired M6. What are your opinions on this lens? Is it a good all rounder? What's the bokeh like? I'll only probably be able to afford one piece of Leica glass, so I don't want to be making any rash decisions...

Which 50 summicron are you looking at? There isn't actually an aspherical version of the lens, so there's really no such thing as a pre-asph summicron.

All the 50 summicrons are well regarded. Though I'd argue that a lot of users don't consider them a very sexy option. Not really sure why that is.

Personally, I'd opt for a 35 summicron (one of the pre-asph versions), but then I prefer a slightly wider field of view.

Some people complain that the 50 cron is a little prone to flare. And you don't usually hear a lot of people bragging about its bokeh (a very subjective thing, anyway). Still, it's a very sharp lens. And a classic one, at that.

The one I was looking at was a Leica Summicron 50mm f2-M (serial number 3958430) - which I believe indicates its manufacture is after 2000. Regarding the bokeh issue - its a personal and, indeed, subjective thing - to whit, I have answered my own question via viewing the dedicated Flickr groups images and its answered my question satisfactorily.

I may well plumb for a 35mm at some point, but it will be after the 50. Cheers for your answer.

In my experience, the summicron is a great lens. Mine flared a bit at times, but other than that, I had no complaints. I sold it to get the ASPH Summilux. I kind of wanted the extra speed. I can't imagine trading the ASPH for a pre-ASPH. It's sharp, resists flare, and has decent performance at minimum focus distance. I don't find it too sharp, too contrasty, or possessing of funky bokeh. The only complaints I could think up of are the price and the fact that the pre-ASPH is a bit more compact. For me.

It's a great lense - not the sexiest (three-stops slower than Leica's fastest lense), and not the smallest (the 50/2.8 Elmar is truly tiny), but a fantastic all-rounder with a great signature. It's one of my favourite lenses - and that's before you realise it is also great, great value...

No but I'm considering that--or a Summarit--for precisely those reasons of yours. The current 50 1.4 R Lux is my favourite Leica 50 to date... I'd love an M version, but I don't honestly know which of the pre-ASPH versions "lines up" if any do...
