Nick De Marco Posted February 27, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 27, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Seriously. I trust you. If I have found a bargain here, please don't outbid me. I'd love to have an MP to add to my collection. Leica MP 0.85 Chrom on eBay, also, 35mm Rangefinder, Film Cameras, Photography (end time 28-Feb-08 09:50:13 GMT) BUT, the fable - if it looks too good to be true it probably is - is ringing around my ears. A very low starting price with no reserve. I have made a bid, speculatively (thus my plea to you) and tried to get some more info from the seller (so far to no avail). Any obvious warning signs here (apart from the no paypal worry), or have I found myself a great possible bargain that you are not going to usurp? Thanks Nick

nobbylon Posted February 27, 2008 Share #3 Posted February 27, 2008 personally I would run a mile or for all metric's 1.6 ish km!!!!! no visible feed back on expensive items! ask if you can pick up in person and pay cash! be carefull with your cash, good luck
spylaw4 Posted February 27, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 27, 2008 A quick and dirty search reveals that he last sold something in Aug 07 (my German is not enough to make out what he sold), and bought in Dec 07. Now I might be doing him an grave injustice, but I would be suspicious also, with the lack of an answer (via eBay I hope) just increasing the doubts. It's possible it is a user hi-jack, which does happen, I know - I've been hi-jacked once.
Irishimage Posted February 27, 2008 Share #5 Posted February 27, 2008 Interesting also that the seller is registered in Germany the camera is located in Austria its priced in UK Pounds and its not listed for sale on the German/Austria E-Bay site. Although the seller has got a 100% positive feedback rating on over 90 transactions.. could be a good one.. Now i wonder how much i should bid ... nobbylon Posted February 27, 2008 Share #7 Posted February 27, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) i'm not one to tell anyone what to do with their own cash but........... don't send any money. pick it up in person and make contact with seller and get them to agree to these terms. see what they say and get a feel from that. peter_n Posted February 27, 2008 Share #8 Posted February 27, 2008 No email reply? Run! Alternatively, email again and ask for the serial nr. Every purchase on eBay I ask the seller for the serial nr and if I don't get it I immediately lose interest. This could be genuine but why aren't there a stack of pictures showing the camera close up? The generic picture is also an issue I think. I'd be very careful... earleygallery Posted February 27, 2008 Share #9 Posted February 27, 2008 I wouldn't say that there is anything obviously 'wrong' with this seller, reasonable amount of feedback and member since '05. The real bidding on e bay happens within the last minute of the auction so the current price is irrelevant. There are programs out there like Auction Raptor which put your bid in automatically within fractions of a second from the end. The seller may be taking a little risk with no reserve but Leica items generally get plenty of attention on e bay, and the fact there's no reserve will attract more bidders so the risk may pay off! However, if I bid on anything of higher value I always send the seller a question first - if they respond quickly and accurately it at least gives me more comfort to make the bid. I won't bid on this, but I will add it to my watch list to see the outcome!
xjr Posted February 27, 2008 Share #10 Posted February 27, 2008 What does the number 10305 signify ? A leica MP in a red box ? Should it not be black and velvety ? This smells...
Skjöll Posted February 27, 2008 Share #11 Posted February 27, 2008 Nick, I'm afraid there is a little misunderstanding which I'm hoping to clarify: as the seller is located in Austria and you are located in the UK, eBay automatically calculates cost & shipping in the currency of the viewer. When I (located in CA) visit a German website, I get the shipping details in USD. More than that, if you (theoretically) bid internationally for items which are illegal in your country, your site will automatically be blocked. Just try something like "night vision sniping scope" or "Kalashnikov spare parts" and you will see what happens.
RITskellar Posted February 27, 2008 Share #12 Posted February 27, 2008 I can't believe, Nick, that you're actually thinking of sending this person money, when they haven't been responsive to your questions, the geographic logistics of their posting is suspect, they have been deliberately oblique in their description of the camera, and the camera is with the wrong box (which by itself is not necessarily a big deal, other than it points to an item that maybe wasn't looked after particularly well or possibly obtained through nefarious means). Scam artists prey upon people's desire to own a premium Leica at too-good-to-be-true prices. Maybe there is a reward for those that take an illogical risk. On the other hand, they'll usually just get what they've got coming.... nothing. Good luck either way! Andy
engelfangen Posted February 27, 2008 Share #13 Posted February 27, 2008 I would never buy from a seller who has only "private" feedbacks. best regards Marc
Nick De Marco Posted February 27, 2008 Author Share #14 Posted February 27, 2008 hmmm. I am now waiting to be outbid. I did get a reply from the seller saying he did not have paypall but had "moneybooks". I looked another system and it offers no protection for the customer. So I contacted the seller and told him that if he does not set up paypal then even if I am the highest bidder i will be unable to complete the transaction as I have no protection. I know that's offends ebay etiquette but there is nothing stopping him setting up paypal. Anyway, I'm pretty sure I will be outbid but if not I'll let you all know the outcome
chris_livsey Posted February 27, 2008 Share #15 Posted February 27, 2008 I would never buy from a seller who has only "private" feedbacks.best regards Marc The feedback is not private. Sellers are not allowed to have the feedback set to private. it is not detailed because the transactions are over 90 days old. The last two transactions were for £7 and £15 as buyer. A trick to run up a good large feedback is to buy a lot of cheap stuff. Also, personally, the Rolex watch he is also selling would seem to raise suspicion above the minimum required to flash AVOID. brianv Posted February 28, 2008 Share #16 Posted February 28, 2008 No feedback since August. Lots of activity, then nothing for months. This smells like a hi-jacked account. It would help if you could see the items bought or sold. You can't, and it looks like a scam.
rob_x2004 Posted February 28, 2008 Share #17 Posted February 28, 2008 I wouldn't say that there is anything obviously 'wrong' with this seller Yea its one of the problems with the new eBay format. More important than the "private feedback issue" is that the item description gets deleted very early so you cant actually see what feedbacks were for. Used to be you could do your research and get a feel for whether the seller and his buyers referecnces were plausible. ps...Nick, if it doesnt all pan out for you with that auction, then for bundles of used notes I can help you out with this perfect classic, complete with strap, only one owner, sorry the pic isnt all that great but, trust me, all the surfaces are clear bright and contrasty with no misalignment, all the speeds sound right to my ear and... ...... The picture of the MP looks doctored and is technically totally different from the one of the Rolex being sold by the same guy. Would he not use the same camera and background to take the pictures? The Rolex is supposedly in Rangersdorf, while the MP is in Klagenfurt.... Hmmmm This is either a hijacked account or somebody went into a lot of trouble building up feedback buying cheap stuff, to get ready for the BIG KILL. Just my 2 cents. RITskellar Posted February 28, 2008 Share #19 Posted February 28, 2008 Seriously. I trust you. If I have found a bargain here, please don't outbid me. I'd love to have an MP to add to my collection. Leica MP 0.85 Chrom on eBay, also, 35mm Rangefinder, Film Cameras, Photography (end time 28-Feb-08 09:50:13 GMT) The camera photo posted in that eBay listing is stolen from http://www.leicashop.com. They have the same photo of an MP they're selling. In fact, the description is the same as well. They have it for sale for 1890 euros.
spylaw4 Posted February 28, 2008 Share #20 Posted February 28, 2008 This item should be reported to Ebay as a possible scam/fake, for all the reasons above.
