Wonderful. Only just in time so that I can use it with my new M9. But, officially, it is still not supported.

Finally after a long long wait Aperture 3 is arrived but it's unbelievable that still there not the M9 profile on it.

I have just tried to download the trial version but their server must be overwhelmed as I cannot even fill in my email.

Unless there is a lot "under the hood" this seems a bit underwhelming for a whole new number upgrade. Face recognition is not a significant tool in a professional application. Most users like me, would already have iPhoto with this, although I have to admit to never having used it - why would I, as I already have all my photos organised by years (separate libraries for each year), events and dates. As I use CS4 for post RAW conversion photo-processing, being able to use a brush for adjustments seems pretty old hat (been there since PS4 or 5?).

I am also disappointed that it will not run under Leopard. I have not yet upgraded our MacBook Air to Slow Leopard after huge problems with one of our iMacs and SL. As my wife is the main user of the MBA, except when we are travelling, I could not take all the shouting about "what is wrong with this thing!" I would have liked to have loaded Aperture 3 as a relatively small application into the MBA (it only has a 64GB SSD) to replace C1 and PSE6 - one stop shopping for RAW and post processing when travelling light.

I would be very happy if someone could answer this question reliably before I am going to upgrade from Aperture 2 to Aperture 3.

You can always download the free 30 day trial. I have now got registered for this but have not received the download link and temporary serial number yet after about an hour and a half. They must be very busy.

I have the registration email and the 558Mb download is happening reasonably quickly. Another four minutes to completion on my MacBook apparently.

This could be expensive. I was expecting that it would only run on an Intel Mac so my five year old G5 may have to be replaced even sooner than I was planning. Now if only Apple could sort out the problems with the 27 inch iMac displays...

I entered another email and this one worked. It does load M9 files but quite slowly (about twice as slow as C1). For quite a long time, some of them look like the pic below. Once they have loaded properly they do show up properly and the metadata has some of the M9 information. It is not showing the tri-elmar for example and says "lens unknown". It does not show an estimated aperture but then neither does C1 on the M9 in contrast to the M8, where it did. The thumbnail looks very similar to that of C1 V5 Pro with the M9 profile.

Hi Wilson

how does the M9 support compare with Aperture 2?

Says Mac OS X v10.5.8 or v10.6.2 or later on the tech specs page.

Ian,

On the blurb it says "For Snow Leopard" so I assumed it would not run on 10.5.X. I therefore bit the bullet today and while my wife is away at a meeting in Glasgow, have updated her MacBook Air to Snow Leopard - so far so good (while the cat's away etc). The excellent news is that SL takes up much less room than Leopard, so after clearing out all the superfluous junk with "Clean my Mac", we now have 41+ GB free on the 64 GB SSD. Aperture 3 seems to run OK on it (it is a dual core 1.8 gHz one).

I suppose we will get ripped off on the price here in the UK again. I may get my son-in-law, who is a graduate student at Johns Hopkins to buy me a copy from their campus Apple Store if I decide I like A3 better than LR3. I certainly prefer the indexing/importing/library system - much more transparent.

I will have to convert the same DNG to a 16 bit TIFF on A3, LR3 Beta and C1 V5 Pro and see what they all look like printed to A3+.

Wilson,

so I hope your wife isn't changing the IT provider because the reason for much smaller footprint was loss of important data :D

As to being ripped off, nothing used to compare to Switzerland, but things are changing slowly over time. A3 upgrade now is offered for 129 Swisses, tax included. That's perfect.

My problems with A2 compared to LR (with camera profiles) were the skin tones reproduced in A2, metadata handling and, maybe most significantly, the inability of the company to deliver upgrades for new cameras w/o knowing if they even ever come out with a new version. The first two points may be user errors of course.

Regards

Ivo

I'm an Aperture user but as we have been waiting so long for this release a few more days won't matter as I would prefer the dust to settle first.

The face recognition is of no interest but i am hoping that the improved printing routines finally help to get this hit and miss area under better control. Some of the tools look useful as do some of the new organisation features.

On the Aperture Forum, people are downloading the trial and then opting to buy as a way to get good functional use immediately. It appears that this also works for the Upgrade.
