MPJMP Posted September 21, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just bought my D-LUX 4 this past January. It's my only digital camera (well, apart from my iPhone 4). While I love my MP and film, the DL4 has pretty much taken over for day-to-day pictures of family and friends. Having the ability to take HD video at will is a major plus and has rendered my camcorder obsolete and collecting dust. My trial subscription to Adobe LR3 is about to run out and I was planning to shell out the $300 for it, but read yesterday that the D LUX-5 will include a free Lightroom download. It seems like the thing to do would be to just upgrade to the D-LUX 5. I get Lightroom, plus the improvements in zoom range, more efficient video codec, etc. So, any other DL4 owners considering the upgrade to DL5? Oh, and come 2011, I also plan to be in line for a Fuji X100.
Advertisement Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Hi MPJMP, Take a look here D-LUX 4 Owners: Who's Upgrading to the D-LUX 5?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
farnz Posted September 21, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 21, 2010 Yep, my money's down. Pete.
lagrassa Posted September 21, 2010 Share #3 Posted September 21, 2010 I most likely will. Any word on pricing yet?
Walt Calahan Posted September 21, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 21, 2010 "I most likely will. Any word on pricing yet?" The pricing is already known if you buy the Panasonic Lumix LX-5 which is the same camera. I've seen it as low as $455 with free shipping when ordering from a third-party seller on Amazon. The advantage of the Panasonic is the handgrip is molded into the body at no extra cost. The D-Lux 5 doesn't have this feature, forcing the user to buy a separate grip if the owner feels one is necessary. No word yet for how much the Red Dot will cost. farnz Posted September 21, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 21, 2010 I most likely will. Any word on pricing yet? £620 in London so I'm hoping to trade in my DL4. Pete.
lagrassa Posted September 21, 2010 Share #6 Posted September 21, 2010 Ah yes, the price for the Red Dot.
viramati Posted September 21, 2010 Share #7 Posted September 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think I probably go for the LX5 as I already have LR3 and can't really see any performance advantage as I only really shoot RAW. As to the grip I already have the D-lux-4 grip and wonder if it will be compatible with the d-lux-

bill Posted September 21, 2010 Share #9 Posted September 21, 2010 The advantage of the Panasonic is the handgrip is molded into the body at no extra cost. The D-Lux 5 doesn't have this feature, forcing the user to buy a separate grip if the owner feels one is necessary. ...this cuts both ways. I specifically bought the D-Lux 4 because I disliked the vestigial handgrip on the Panasonic and found the Leica one much more suitable. I won't be upgrading; there is not enough for me to do so. I'll wait for the D-Lux 6. Regards, Bill

MPJMP Posted September 21, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted September 21, 2010 The ability to zoom while shooting video is another big plus, IMO. With the DL5 I can finally justify selling the camcorder. I hate having to juggle a camera and camcorder at the same time. When my daughter was born 2 years ago I had the camcorder, a digicam, and my film MP (loaded with XP2) ready to memorialize the event. When my son is born this January, I will probably just have the DL5 and MP (again with XP2). One less gizmo hanging off my neck and my son's first view of me won't resemble Dennis Hopper in Apocalypse Now.

Le Samourai Posted September 21, 2010 Share #13 Posted September 21, 2010 Is it still worth getting a D4?
prk60091 Posted September 21, 2010 Share #14 Posted September 21, 2010 Is it still worth getting a D4? the dlux4 is a great camera and now should be selling at a better price- if you don't need LR or a longer zoom the dlux4 is a fine camera
viramati Posted September 21, 2010 Share #15 Posted September 21, 2010 Pete thanks for the info. so if I upgrade it will definitely be to the LX5
ho_co Posted September 21, 2010 Share #16 Posted September 21, 2010 As to the grip I already have the D-lux-4 grip and wonder if it will be compatible with the d-lux-5 D-Lux 5 tech specs: 110 x 66 x 43 mm D-Lux 4 tech specs: 108,7 x 59,5 x 44 mm D-Lux 5 handgrip cat no 18715 D-Lux 4 handgrip cat no 18697 The D-Lux 3 was a minor advance on the D-Lux 2, and was less expensive. Major change came with D-Lux 4, which was priced higher. Since the lens seems to be the nain change here, maybe D-Lux 5 will also be lower-priced than its predecessor? flappo Posted September 22, 2010 Share #17 Posted September 22, 2010 No , as I don't think the 5 is that big a leap over the 4. Maybe if they had made the wide end wider I'd be tempted. The new Leica that's impressed me the most is that stunning new X1 , now that's more like it !!!!
griffster Posted September 22, 2010 Share #18 Posted September 22, 2010 The wide can probably be made wider with a Panny wide angle attachment. The "new" X1 is the same as the old X1, picture wise.
MPJMP Posted September 22, 2010 Author Share #19 Posted September 22, 2010 No , as I don't think the 5 is that big a leap over the 4. To be honest, if it wasn't for the fact that I was already in the market for Lightroom 3 I would probably just hang onto my DL4. The incremental improvements are nice, but alone not enough to warrant the trade-in. Including LR3 was the deal-maker for me, and might I say it is a substantial (IMHO) upgrade over the Capture 1 software that came with the DL4, which I found to be a bit awkward to use coming from Photoshop. Then again, the sale price of the DL5 will also be a determining factor. If it comes out and sells for the same as the DL4 ($800-$900), it will be a no brainer, because the money I would likely get for the DL4 + an additional $300 for LR3 would balance out close to the to the cost of a DL5 (maybe throw in an extra $100-$200, which is justified by the "improvements"). Then again, if they want $1,200 for it I'd probably be better off buying LR3 separately and hanging onto my DL4 for a few more years until the next model is released. RE: LX5 vs. DL5 - Like Bill, I prefer the camera without a grip. Plus, I will admit that after shooting Leica film cameras for 15 years I like having the Red Dot on my compact P&S and am willing to pay a little extra knowing it's supporting the company.
