elgenper Posted September 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just read this in DPReview about the Version 2.0 firmware update for the LX-3: "...The lens position of zooming and manual focusing is memorized and will resume at this position.... " Now, this is without doubt the single most important improvement I (and obviously many others) could wish for in the D-Lux 4. C´mon, Leica!!!! We want it, and we want it NOW!!!!! YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!! Please I have always wanted the ability to start up at the tele end. This is where I do most of my shooting, and I have always suspected that it would save precious seconds (and power) to be able to do so. mjh Posted September 28, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 28, 2009 On Panasonic’s site there is a link to a fairly comprehensive PDF document explaining all the improvements, see http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/download/LX3/ftp/DMC-LX3_eng.pdf, especially page 6. kully Posted September 28, 2009 Share #10 Posted September 28, 2009 I updated my LX3 this morning. The AF is noticeably quicker and, yes, the zoom and focus remembering is very handy.

daveleo Posted September 28, 2009 Share #12 Posted September 28, 2009 having no pride (nor a dlux4 or lx3, just yet) i will ask a silly question ... if they are 99% identical cameras, except for some software coding differences, why can't ( ? ) you load the LX3 firmware into your dlux4? or can you? elgenper Posted September 28, 2009 Author Share #13 Posted September 28, 2009 having no pride (nor a dlux4 or lx3, just yet) i will ask a silly question ... if they are 99% identical cameras, except for some software coding differences, why can't ( ? ) you load the LX3 firmware into your dlux4? or can you? Well, MAYBE it will work.... OTOH, although the raw file formats as such are essentially the same from both cameras, the bundled software will reportdly refuse to handle raw´s from the "wrong" camera, so there´s some marketing mumbo-jumbo going on. Very likely, the firmware is similarly "protected". Also, it seems a bit dangerous to even try it: if the firmware gets messed up, you have an expensive paperweight, admittedly a red-dot one:rolleyes: And the warranty will probably be void... And.... IF it works, you´ll have an LX-3 with a red dot for all your trouble! That said, I´d rather have an LX-3 with these improvements than a D-Lux 4 without them.... But I think they will come from Leica, too, in due time.
jimbo035 Posted September 28, 2009 Share #14 Posted September 28, 2009 "That said, I´d rather have an LX-3 with these improvements than a D-Lux 4 without them." then be off to the Panasonic LX3 forum .. Oh sorry, there isn't one is there ?

ho_co Posted September 29, 2009 Share #16 Posted September 29, 2009 There's good reason to keep the firmware product-specific: Remember that the LX-3 has at least one function not on the D-Lux 4, the "accessory lens attached" menu item. If the Panasonic firmware were to try to access some part of code that the D-Lux doesn't have, who knows what evils could be released? Sit tight. Leica will test it and offer it when they're sure it's right.
