Right... thank you babelfish for the translation, and thank you for your kind words. Personally, I think they evoke the atmosphere of the holiday - at least for me. The excitement of the children, the battle for donuts that leave lines around city blocks and the sheer gluttony of the whole festival, as the candles are left to burn out, alone, in the window. But then again, that's just me.

Bo_Lorentzen Posted December 29, 2008 Share #7 Posted December 29, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good Morning Julian, Well, I can see the point of view from teufel (rusty German but is that "der teufel" by any chance?) and maybe particularly image 2 seems off. However - I also find a lot of emotional value in all of the images, for me particularly 1 and 3 seems very interesting and drawing me further into the images. I really wish I did know more about the holiday, and feel these images would go wonderfully with a essay about the modern incarnation of these old traditions. Thank you for sharing your holiday images.
stuny Posted December 29, 2008 Share #8 Posted December 29, 2008 Julian - I think #1, 3 & 4 are very nearly excellent. After reviewing your Yom Kippur photos again I realized why they are just short of excellent, since much of the same problem appears in that fine set: Lack of sharpness. I suggest trying some sharpening on these, and more care in focusing in the future.
roguewave Posted December 29, 2008 Share #9 Posted December 29, 2008 Julian, Happy Holidays & New Year. You sort of set yourself up with these images. For me, a fine mood in these frames. After a drink or two, then chasing the "kinnda" around to make fun and good family excitement, possibly some arguing, the images look better. Let's face it, with a Nocti, the bar is set pretty high. These are not even in the realm of being close to focused on anything of importance. That I fear is the real source of the comments. I don't know you at all & I have no ax to grind. Love the colors and the ceremonial nature of the settings. Many people on the forum might take the stance that if you shell out the bucks for this signature instrument, it might just be proper to know how to use it. Shalom, Peace, be well & have fun with this gem! All the best, Ben
elansprint72 Posted December 29, 2008 Share #10 Posted December 29, 2008 These take me back to my childhood friends' houses. For some reason I was always invited along as the token goy and as a result learned a great deal about what my Mother would refer to as "foreign food" and "foreign customs". Happy days. Unfortunately these shots do nothing to change my contention that, photographically speaking, the Noctilux is just a piece of aspirational crap. mongrelnomad Posted December 30, 2008 Author Share #11 Posted December 30, 2008 Let's face it, with a Nocti, the bar is set pretty high. These are not even in the realm of being close to focused on anything of importance. That I fear is the real source of the comments. I don't know you at all & I have no ax to grind. I don't understand the obsession with the Noctilux and the percieved 'bar'. Is there are 'bar' set for a Summicron? Or a Summilux? And what about the humble Elmarit? It is a lense: a tool with which to document what you see; just like any other. That it has a different signature is simply a side-effect, and the price, once bought, neither here nor there. As to these pictures, they are very much a documentation of a holiday, a day, for me. There are more, including my ill mother and my girlfriend which I have not included (I have a rule regarding no friends or family on the internet) - and as such, the 'dvarim' - things - that made up the day are documented here. Maybe they hold no artistic merit, maybe they do. But to the Noct: I take the same kind of pictures whatever lense I'm using. I don't think about DOF any differently than I would any other lense, and I don't go out to get a signature 'Noctilux' look. It is the lense I use at night, and as such, the photos look like they do. It is very difficult to focus, and so the focus may not be spot on (not to say it always is with other lenses) - but, as they say here "ze ma she yesh": "that's what there is." Whether you find it dreamy and charming or simply infuriating, is very much a personal, subjective call. Other shots from the same roll: Unfortunately these shots do nothing to change my contention that, photographically speaking, the Noctilux is just a piece of aspirational crap. If you think it is 'crap', fine, each to their own opinion. But whether it is 'aspirational' or not, should not be a factor in judging it.
mongrelnomad Posted December 30, 2008 Author Share #12 Posted December 30, 2008 there were extraorbitant fotos taken with a Hasselblad 503 in Summer. Thank you - and I am honoured you remember my Hasselblad photos! I still have the camera, but unfortunately do not get to use it as much as I would like. The cost of 120 process/scan is prohibitive, and it is not the most eminently portable. The lack of internal meter does not help now the skies have gone from clear to constantly changing. But I will try and take it out more - promise
stuny Posted December 30, 2008 Share #13 Posted December 30, 2008 Julian - I very much like these last two for all the reaons I liked both of your series, and in these two I find the focus acceptable.
Double Negative Posted December 31, 2008 Share #14 Posted December 31, 2008 Okay, they're not "sharp" per se. But they capture a moment and do so using natural light. If you look beyond the whole "sharpness thing" (and it's really not that bad) then these are fine images. There's more to an image than just sharpness. And in some cases, were it not for the fact that "this one goes to f/1" there would be no shot at all at worst, or blurred by motion at best. The Nocti clearly isn't everyone's cup of tea. But in certain situations - and it is a specialty lens - it gets the job done! Nicely done, Julian.
