Bill Allsopp Posted February 9, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 9, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone have experience of using an X1 with a spotting scope? If so any and all information gratefully received and example images would be nice too. Particularly; What sort of effective focal length does one get? What are the effective exposure settings of this set up? Many thanks

andybarton Posted February 9, 2012 Share #2 Posted February 9, 2012 Depends upon the scope to which it is attached. Leica's information is here Leica Camera AG - Sport Optics - Digiscoping
trylab Posted February 13, 2012 Share #3 Posted February 13, 2012 I use Leica X1 + Nikon ED82 as in the link below, and also Leica X1 Digiscoping-adapter between the X1 and ED82. It works just fine. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-x1-forum/137062-digitscoping.html
luccombelad Posted February 14, 2012 Share #4 Posted February 14, 2012 I use the X1 with a Leica® APO Televid 82 Angled Spotting Scope. Not being big into photography (just yet). I just make sure I have the Aperture set to f2.8. I have experimented with ISO settings especially in low light conditions in an attempt to stop the graininess. But with birds very rarely truly still, I end up with blur at the lower ISO settings. So I am happy to go with Auto ISO, but cap it at 800. All of the bird photos in the following stream have been digiscoped with the above set up. photos Overall I am very happy with the results. I didn't expect to be able to capture moving birds. But when a bird is still long enough. I often get better results than others with 10K worth of kit.

trylab Posted March 9, 2012 Share #6 Posted March 9, 2012 Hi Just some example image with Leica X1 and spotting scope. First photo: Leica X1 without the scope. Distance to the ship is 5000 mtr (5 km). Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Next photo from the same spot with Leica X1 and Nikon Fieldscope. The ship is 230 mtr long and 38 mtr wide. 100% crop. 5000 mtr is a long distance and I think this is not bad longrange quality. btw. it is in a Norwegian fjord Thanks!
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! dkCambridgeshire Posted March 30, 2012 Share #11 Posted March 30, 2012 I wish to use my X1 to digiscope with my APO Televid 62 for which I have (a) Leica 16x- 48x eyepiece & ( Leica 32x eyepiece. I have not seen a specific Leica adaptor listed - probably because the Televid 62 was discontinued by the time the X1 was available. Is there a decent generic digiscope adaptor available? Best wishes dunk
trylab Posted March 31, 2012 Share #12 Posted March 31, 2012 Hello Can you measure your eyepiece diameter (in mm)?
dkCambridgeshire Posted April 1, 2012 Share #13 Posted April 1, 2012 Hello Can you measure your eyepiece diameter (in mm)? Using a caliper the diameters are: T62 32x eyepiece: 4cm diameter rubber eyecup; 3.7cm diameter across the barrel of the eyepiece behind the eyecup T62 16x-48x zoom eyepiece: 4.1cm at front of the rubber eyecup (ie where te eye looks) but 4.2cm at rear of eyecup ie the rubber eyecup tapers slightly towards the front; and 4.1cm across the barrel of eyepiece behind the eyecup Thank you dunk
trylab Posted April 1, 2012 Share #14 Posted April 1, 2012 From the X1 digiscoping adapter manual: "Compatible eyepieces: The LEICA X1 Digiscoping Adapter is designed for the Leica APO Televid 65/82 models, which have their own eyepieces. It cannot be used with the eyepieces on the earlier APO Televid / Televid 62 and 77 models." All right. (a) the lens (glass) on the X1 is 20mm, the lens on your eyepiece must be 20mm or more. I can't use my 16mm diameter eyepiece (to small), My 31mm diameter eyepiece works perfect. ( if you want to use the Leica X1 digiscoping adapter (part no. 42331L) you need som kind of spacer or a plastic tube or something between your 40mm dia, eyepiece and 58mm inner dia, X1 adapter. Thats easy to fix. Conclusion: you can use the Leica X1 digiscoping adapter if your eyepiece (glass) is + 20mm and you find something to center your eyepiece in the X1 digi. adapter. You can also use Vortex Universal Digiscoping Adapter model: 28mm-45mm diameter. I ordered mine from Adorama, but it is more tricky to use. I don't know much about Televid, but I think there is a 32x wide angle eyepiece for the 62? Welcome, dear visitor! gbealnz Posted April 1, 2012 Share #15 Posted April 1, 2012 I can't answer your specifics on the X1, or the spotting scope, but as astro-photography is also a passion of mine I might be able to suggest something. Deal with Baader Planetarium, in Germany, they are very e mail friendly and helpful. Startseite Baader-Planetarium GmbH - Mammendorf I know they certainly off adaption systems to accommodate most of the cameras out there today, as well as many of the eyepiece sections. I'll be surprised if they cannot sort something out. Gary

Sorry, I misunderstood your question about eyepiece diameter - I assumed you meant the eyecups for the purposes of attaching an adaptor. The actual glass eyepieces on the 32x and the 16-48x zoom are both 18mm diameter so I guess they are not compatible with the Leica X1 digiscope adaptor. dunk
