S2 first impression

Well my S2 arrived and I ran a fast test yesterday. I have not had the time yet to create a profile or work out a curve setting so this just a first impression.

The S2 with a 70 mm Summarit is definitely sharper than my Toyo View with a 150 Apo Sironar S. It could be that there is just more traffic around my studio these days and vibration during 20 minute exposures is the problem. I've ordered a Berlebach wooden tripod to see if that makes a difference. And I'll order a new IR blocking filter for the Sironar.

The BetterLight Super 6K scanback delivers more dynamic range. About 3 real stops. Again, I need to work out a curve setting for the S2. Worst case, I'll have to bracket my S2 exposures and merge in PS. But I think a profile and a curve will get me close.

The S2 captures are definitely more saturated. Again easily fixable.

The difference between the 107.3 MB and 309 MB files are visible but but only at extreme print sizes. I'd say there does not look like anyone can see it in prints on canvas up to 30x40.

In all the S2 looks promising but I still have a lot of work to do before I'm satisfied.

S2 first BetterLight next.

I'm curious what benefits medium format or large format digital have over a smaller camera when applying this much processing to the camera's output files.

Initially I was thinking the same as you. But after a second look I also saw that it was a painting. So you were not alone :D:D:D

This shot was with the Pentax P67 SMC Macro 100/4.0 and screw on 1:1 adapter....

Microcontrast a bit down from the Leica S lenses but a decent lens even at infinity.

Sorry, I see most of us are landscape shooters and did not want to confuse anyone but just in case someone out there is using their S2 for art repo here is the results of my test.

Shooting a S2 with cross polarization (polarizing filters over both lights and lens) results in a capture with too much contrast and saturation. Pull 80 helped a bit but not that much. I'll use 160 ISO. I used an EyeOne (publish) to profile the camera. Then I used 235/128/15 for my white/midtone/black settings. The results are close to the BetterLight Super6K.

First image is raw capture. The second is profiled and adjusted for H/M/S.

Congrats on your new camera.

I profiled our S2 for copying work too and happy with the results. I only have the Leica 70mm and still use the Zeiss 120mm. with an adapter.

Sinar 54H is a bit better in multi-shot mode and the Sinar workflow is very nice but Leica- S2 is much more liberating.

I took the S2 home from the studio yesterday to play with the Image Shuttle software. Grabbed a few orchids from my greenhouse to shoot because it was a rainy day. All I can say is WOW! I don't think this camera is going to live in the studio. It's just too good.
