voe Posted July 4, 2010 Share #1 Posted July 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone got Nokton 50mm f/1.5 samples on Leica M9? I bought this lens while waiting for my Leica M9 and was wondering what is the general impression when used on M9. Thanks, Voe

dseelig Posted July 4, 2010 Share #2 Posted July 4, 2010 Had one on an m8 thought it sucked in hard lighting, I would get anomilies with this lens I would not get with Leica or zeiss lenses.

Do you mind explaining what you mean by this? Never heard such a thing 'sucked in hard lighting' A photographer deals with hard lighting, not the lens. Umm ... maybe this is the reason why Mike Johnston once wrote about this lens: "It's a lens I'm virtually allergic to—I quite dislike it." pklein Posted July 4, 2010 Share #5 Posted July 4, 2010 It's a bokeh thing. In wide-open shots, out-of-focus light sources tend to have hard edges, which drives some people nuts. It's just the lens' fingerprint, it happens on film and the M8, too. Other than that, it's a fine lens.
Jelico Posted July 4, 2010 Share #6 Posted July 4, 2010 If you get a good copy of that lens you will like it. Bokeh is bit hard, but it can be sharp wide open and has its unique signature (which I like). I say "it can" because my first copy was sharp wide open but front focusing badly. The second copy is focusing ok, but its soft wide open and it doesn't get much better stopped down. Time to send it back.
nik_nik9 Posted July 4, 2010 Share #7 Posted July 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi - I don't think the Nokton is that bad. That picture has been brighten up by 3 (!) full stops exposure value, so excuse the noise (I never use noise reduction as it cuts down sharpness, rather add grain to make it more pleasing). I'll add the original file before post processing to compare. For me the bokeh is fine - not much different from other 50mm I own. As I recently purchased a Summicron (latest version with focus tab) I made "pixel peeper" test with it, comparing to the Nokton and the Summarit. There was no difference between the Summarit and Summicron (only a slight focus shift on the summicron). The Nokton is in the center as good as them, or even a little bit sharper. But on the edges it falls down a little bit, such as all my Voigländers. The Nokton, as all my other Voigtländer lenses, is not that carefully centered, so you always have one corner softer than the others. That shows the difference to the Leica lenses, at least on "pixel peeping". I doubt I would recognize it on daily shooting But of course, I like the perfect lens, too I'll keep my Nokton for sure! jaques Posted July 4, 2010 Share #8 Posted July 4, 2010 I like that picture, nice :-) I am very happy with my Nokton 1.5- it is very sharp and focus well on the m8/m9. Build quality is excellent and for the price I think it is a brilliant deal. Cant find a digital image just now to post- have some nice film shots come back recently. I have also read some positive reviews about the lens.

Jelico Posted July 5, 2010 Share #10 Posted July 5, 2010 Update: I managed to exchange my copy of the lens for another one that arrived in shop,... and I am very pleased with quality. Sharp wide open, very sharp stopped down, lower contrast than Leica 50/F2. All in all very good lens.
