Philippe Vandendriessche Posted December 9, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I wonder if there is a way to control the M9 via USB. I have applications where I need to take 1 photograph each 5 seconds. Do you know if something exists?
Advertisement Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Hi Philippe Vandendriessche, Take a look here M9 remote control. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mhoersch Posted December 9, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 9, 2009 Easy: watch, cable release, thumb.
mikeyt Posted December 9, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 9, 2009 bribe a young relative to sit there with their thumb on the cable release?

Do you know if something exists? Just put it in C mode and tape down the shutter release - that's about the rate you'll get
Nicoleica Posted December 9, 2009 Share #5 Posted December 9, 2009 Many years ago, you could buy clockwork interval timers that could do this. (For use with early mechanical winders.) You might be able to find one somewhere. Otherwise, it would not be too difficult to build such a device using a cam wheel, a small gear box, a variable speed electric motor and a cable release. (Perhaps using a battery operated clock as a source of parts?)
mikenic Posted December 9, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 9, 2009 I have no idea how to do this for the Leica M9 (haven't even got one) but I have previously programmed an animation camera (in FORTH language) to fire via the computer I was using. It has made me wonder if you can run a script on the Leica Digital Capture Software somehow and take the M9 with your laptop. Tethered via USB....??? My 2c anyhow Mike
2Bébèrt Posted December 9, 2009 Share #7 Posted December 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica Digital Capture Software runs only on mac 10.4 (and windows) but doesn't recognises the M9. I believe Phase One doesn't support tethered M9 shooting either.
Guest BigSplash Posted December 9, 2009 Share #8 Posted December 9, 2009 It is surprising that this is not something that Leica provides via the USB port........I guess an appropriate cable with an appropriate software all supplied by Leica as a kit at say £50 that allows users to hook up to a PC is easy money. I would hope that Leica take note and offer this as part of the firmware releases for M9 and M8. I would like to use the facility to not only achieve timed shutter releases (where I get to choose the interval time as part of the program) but also remote releases via the cable and/or at extra cost a wireless accessory. I trust that the purists will not object as this is something that does not in anyway detract from the basic camera, and many of us would find such a facility useful. jaapv Posted December 9, 2009 Share #9 Posted December 9, 2009 Fity quid? Leica? You skipped at least one zero there, Frank:p

carlmuck Posted December 10, 2009 Share #11 Posted December 10, 2009 I wonder if there is a way to control the M9 via USB. I have applications where I need to take 1 photograph each 5 seconds. Do you know if something exists? If you are on a Mac, you can use "Automator" to create an application that fires "Image Capture" (tells it to "Take Picture") and stores pictures to a location of your choice, and then cycles every 5 seconds (or what every delay you want). I'd build the app for you, but I just sent my M9 back to Leica for repair (Automator is easiest to use in "record" mode). c.
Guest BigSplash Posted December 10, 2009 Share #12 Posted December 10, 2009 Fity quid? Leica? You skipped at least one zero there, Frank:p Unfortunately I suspect that you are correct. It is sad however that Leica do not offer the USB accessory cable, the firmware upgrade, and a simple software routine to fire the shutter. It is also sad that Leica does not see the need to be reasonable on price and feel that they can charge obscene prices for even a lens cap. In my view it would be good if Leica priced to market driven value, and offered a complete range of useful items that truly allowed owners to widen their photographic scope. SJP Posted December 10, 2009 Share #13 Posted December 10, 2009 (edited) I seem to recall seeing a picture of a Swiss speed-trap-camera. Googling ..... Here we are:Leica M8 Speed Trap Mod Doesn't this imply that remote triggering is possible? Or maybe they wired up the shutter-release button. Presumably the fines are high enough to cover the investment:D Edited December 10, 2009 by SJP
redbaron Posted December 11, 2009 Share #14 Posted December 11, 2009 You really can't stand Leica, can you Frank?
Guest BigSplash Posted December 12, 2009 Share #15 Posted December 12, 2009 You really can't stand Leica, can you Frank? I actually like Leica very much and I hope that they prosper, and grow. This company has had a horrible history and I hope that they have turned the corner with the M9. If they do not I shall not have a supplier for new lenses and I want to buy the eventual successor to the M9 so I want them to succeed That said I am not going to accept what Leica seem to wish to dish out and people on this forum simply accept as OK
