M9 bug?

I have only had the M9 for a few days, and have not really tested it out in the field yet, but just doing some random shots within the house, I have run into a 'bug' twice already...

Situation #1: I took a photo, DNG+JPG, as it is saving, I hit the review button (Auto review is off), and I think I delete the photo WHILE it was still writing to the SD card, and the camera 'hang'... with the write red led flashing as if it was still recording. The camera became unresponsive and I had to take the battery out.

Situation #2: Took a bunch of photos. I can review them, but when I zoom in, the images remain jagged and won't 'smoothen out' like it should. Then when I tried to download the images to my computer, there were NO files! nothing! Nothing was recorded!

This is with a Sandisk 8GB card. I will try other cards, but I wonder if anyone else has experienced SD operations related issues.

wslam, both of these sound like problems with the file being written to the card. You may like to try another card. You could also reformat the current card and try again. In the first instance, obviously the solution is not to interrupt the writing.

Thanks for your reply.

But this is the thing. If I have enabled Auto Review, then the review will be 'interrupting' the writing to the card anyway. I have changed the SD card to something else now, and will see how it goes. But I just read Nikonweb's review of the M9, and the reviewer also has issues with the SD card, even though his issues are different than mine, but it does seem like things could be improved. At least, shorten the Format SD time!

Well, Auto review is designed to happen while the buffer is still being cleared. However deleting a file while it is still being written is not normal practice. A few people have reported that the camera is fussy about which cards are used. I haven't seen this personally since I only have used one brand and type (Sandisk Extreme III's).

Certainly zooming in the images is slow. We shall have to see if this gets refined with later firmware, as well as write speeds.

Keep in mind that you are saving much bigger files, of course.

I've done all the things that seem to cause problems (like pressing review while the image is writing to card etc, a hangover from using faster cameras) and I haven't lost anything or had any lockups, yet. Thats using an Extreme III 16gb card and .dng only.

I'd go back to basics, first check on the Ebay page how to spot fake Sandisk cards. Format the card in the camera which you've done so thats OK. Try the same thing again but only use .dng or .jpeg, not both, and see if that is the problem.

Have you got a problem with the OP? This is the second time in as many threads you are making this trivial comment.

As for the original problem, I have not seen it on my 4Gb and 16Gb (SanDisk Extreme III) cards. But I would say that generally I/O is far from perfect right now and look forward to the first firmware update that addresses this area of the system.

Trivial maybe, but true!

And you dont have to be a student of Plato's to realise that even a large number of owners' testimony of "no problem" does NOT establish the fact that the camera is ok(!)

But it does balance out what gets wrongly perceived as a big problem just because a few people post a problem.

So, if you want to use invoke Plato, use his logic to answer this, do you see thousands of posts about problems writing to a card, or just a couple? There's your answer staring you in the face.

Your initial comment was glib and provided no insight to the OP. BTW, a large number of owners' testimony of "no problem" does not establish any fact. It only provides those owners' observations.
