KM-25 Posted October 7, 2008 Share #1 Posted October 7, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I did four searches on this and came up with nothing, so here goes: I want to blow out some of the dust under the eyepiece of my M8, how do I remove it? I have tried to gently unscrew it and it does not budge. What is the deal with this?
Advertisement Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 Hi KM-25, Take a look here How do I remove M8 eyepiece?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted October 7, 2008 Share #2 Posted October 7, 2008 I don't think it is like the older eyepieces that unscrew. It comes off with the top plate. See Mark Norton's post on taking a M8 apart.

Guest DuquesneG Posted October 7, 2008 Share #5 Posted October 7, 2008 I don't think it is like the older eyepieces that unscrew. It comes off with the top plate. Are you sure? The eyepieces on the MP and M7 (past the first year) don't require top plate removal. The rubber cover pries off and there are 3 tiny screws holding the metal eyepiece frame to the top plate. These screws are at 12, 3 and 6 o'clock. At 9 o'clock there is no screw, because the top plate starts curving, and the eyepiece frame is flat...thus leaving a large gap between them. That's where the dust gets in. The rubber cover was supposed to hide the gap and, I guess, seal it, but it didn't. Needed silicone. I'm flabbergasted if that hideous oversight wasn't corrected on the M8. My M8s haven't gotten any dust inside the eyepiece, so either it was redesigned, or else the elves at Solms stocked up on ATV silicone.

If you read my post I never said "It only comes off with the top plate". I know for sure you don't have to take it off to get the top plate off and IIRC on older M's, at least with a M3, you had to take the eyepiece out to get the top plate off. Although I may be wrong on that as I haven't taken apart a M3 in over a year. I also said "It doesn't unscrew like the older Leica M's. And it doesn't. I didn't remember exactly how it came off but I knew it didn't unscrew like the old ones. Yes I remember seeing those screws on the M7 but was unsure if it was the same on the M8. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'm pretty sure you are wrong there though. I know you have to take out the flash plugs. I also said "It doesn't unscrew like the older Leica M's. And it doesn't. Fotogo Posted October 9, 2008 Share #8 Posted October 9, 2008 I did four searches on this and came up with nothing, so here goes: I want to blow out some of the dust under the eyepiece of my M8, how do I remove it? I have tried to gently unscrew it and it does not budge. What is the deal with this? KM-25 You may have solved this already, but I will post some photos of mine for your reference and others who may want to know. You can access the inside of your eyepiece lens rather easily. There is a rubber ring that is glued in place. The rubber ring can be pulled off without too much effort. It will stretch a bit then the glue will release and off it will come. Under the rubber ring are 3 Phillips screws. Take care as you remove them. I place a piece of masking tape nearby to hold them so they can’t roll off into gravity pocket. After cleaning, take care not to drop any screw into the viewfinder opening. Doing that might very well require removing the top plate to find the runaway screw. You can check my Flickr for additional photos. The rubber protector ring has a tooth that engages the ring around the eyepiece to prevent the rubber ring from rotating. Also the rubber ring is formed in such a way so that it conforms to the curve of the M8 camera body where the rubber ring comes into contact. Below, the eyepiece shown here has one screw already removed.
marknorton Posted October 9, 2008 Share #9 Posted October 9, 2008 For those who do not wish to risk damaging the surround, here's how to remove the top plate. You need a pair of Phillips P000 and a long P00 screwdrivers. 1. In the base, remove the battery, card and 5 screws securing the plastic plate using the P000. 2. In the battery compartment, remove the screw nearest the end of the camera using the P00; this screw will come out. 3. Look for the hole in the other end of the camera, use the P00 to feel for a screw head; undo it, the screw is retained. 4. Ease off the top and disconnect the flex print by lifting the brown latch and gently pulling the flex print.
