vertekijker Posted April 20, 2008 Share #1 Posted April 20, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) My trusted chrome M8, which I have used for over a year now without any problem, presented me with a problem this morning. I can take pictures and can see them on my screen for a short time, but after that I can't play them back and my menu doesn't show up any more either. Info doesn't work either. The screen stays black, except immediately after having processed a new picture. I tried changing the battery as has been suggested on this forum, but it doesn't help. Anybody else had this problem? Right now I can only think of sending it back to Solms to have it fixed. ---------------------- Frans

Also try a different SD card, that you have formatted in camera. Wilson
vertekijker Posted April 20, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted April 20, 2008 I read some of the threads having to do with similar problems. I tried a few different things that forum members have suggested. One suggestion I followed was to turn the camera on and switch to the self-timer and back a few times. After that the menu and play functions came on again. I thought it was solved. I turned the camera off and when I took off the bottom plate - while the camera was off! - I got a message warning that the bottom plate was off! After that I turned the camera on again... it again no longer worked in the manner I described above, ie. no menu, no play, no info. But when i take pictures, I can see them for a short while... I have three charged batteries and tried all three - they make no difference. I did all the latest firmware updates. Anybody any other ideas? Thank you, Frans

vertekijker Posted April 20, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted April 20, 2008 I just did a new firmware update - doesn't make a difference unfortunately. I still have the problem with the camera in off-position giving a warning that the bottom plate is off when I take it off...
diogenis Posted April 20, 2008 Share #6 Posted April 20, 2008 It's supposed to say that when the lid is off.. but when you put it back on is everything ok?
Guest jimmy pro Posted April 20, 2008 Share #7 Posted April 20, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Not meaning to rub salt in an open wound cause I know you must be p'd to heck, but if Leica's looking for some theme music for the M8 website, I suggest "Another One Bites The Dust" You could try what my old man used to do to get the TV working: smack it on the top and sides with your fist. But it sounds like a trip to Solms is in the offering. BTW, is it writing anything to the card?

I still have the problem with the camera in off-position giving a warning that the bottom plate is off when I take it off... This definitely sounds like a problem Leica needs to fix - clearly there's some kind of problem with the electronics and I don't think it will go away by itself or via field fixes. Sorry to hear it...
vertekijker Posted April 20, 2008 Author Share #9 Posted April 20, 2008 It's supposed to say that when the lid is off.. but when you put it back on is everything ok? Hi, No, with the lid on things aren't fixed. I think I just have to send it back. Mind you, I took over 10,000 pics with it. Hopefully it won't be gone too long. -------------------- Frans

But obviously this is not a satisfactory state of affairs... F

Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 20, 2008 Share #12 Posted April 20, 2008 Well it is not SDS and it does not sound like a battery issue either and it is possible that the brand of cards you are using may not be compatible . BTW which brand is that . The only other conclusion is a circuit may have failed. It sounds bad but a easy fix for Leica too.

This part is normal and is actually a good sign you are getting the warning.

The cards I use are the same I have used for the past year: SanDisk EXtreme III (2GB). Yes, Solms should be able to fix that. Do you think I should add a lengthy note describing everything or will their diagnostic tools be able to figure it out? Thanks for the comforting line:' it sounds bad but an easy fix for Leica'. Fortunately I have two M8's. I was planning on leaving for Arizona next week to do some sightseeing in places I used to visit quite frequently when I lived in California. I was debating whether to take two camera's or one. I guess that problem has been solved now! Thank you, Frans
Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 20, 2008 Share #15 Posted April 20, 2008 Frans there have been reported problems with Sandisk and i don't use them myself and the fact is any card can get corrupt or fail just Sandisks name pop's up a lot in regards to the M8 but still i think we should assume a failure to a circuit. Yes i would send a note with the camera describing the issues at hand. My best guess is leica will simple replace the circuit board on it. It's much easier for them just to replace the board itself than find specifically which circuit may have failed. I also would say you are traveling and such too and may want it shipped to Leica NJ after service to reship to you here in the states or to a leica dealer in the city you maybe visiting. If your a working pro also ask for Pro service which i have myself and my repair times are very short. Need any help here contact me .
vertekijker Posted April 20, 2008 Author Share #16 Posted April 20, 2008 Thank you Guy, Good tip on how to proceed with the Pro Service. I will definitely use that. What cards do you use? F
Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 20, 2008 Share #17 Posted April 20, 2008 I use the Transcends 150x 4gb cards and they seem to work very well so far. I buy mine here but not sure they ship abroad. If you can try another different brand before shipping to Solms it maybe worth a try , I doubt it but you just never know with electronics sometimes. barjohn Posted April 20, 2008 Share #19 Posted April 20, 2008 I don't know where people get the idea that all of these cards can go bad so frequently on an M8 but work perfectly on other cameras or computers. I have yet to see a card fail in years. Even cheap ones work perfectly on my computers (2 iMacs, on Mac Powerbook and one PC). I have handfuls of various cards and memory sticks. If cards are not working on the M8 it is an M8 problem with poor tolerances in its ability to capture the signals and not the card if it works in a computer. Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 20, 2008 Share #20 Posted April 20, 2008 John the M8 will only take certain cards. Look at the recommended list from Leica. It's very short and others work as well. But some cards are not compatible at all , we have seen this for over a year . And we have seen many issues with Sandisk in particular. I have no idea why but it is the case. But I am sorry to disagree but cards fail.
