how to upgrade to Capture 4 ?

Since our M8 ships with 3.7.x Capture One LE, is it possible to upgrade for V4 ? It was released already and it says that Capture One LE users sport a zero cost upgrade to V4..

How can we do it ? If you have the version that came with the M8 that is, because my C1LE only detects an update to 3.7.7 not 4.0.

Thanks and Happy Holiday Season

I downloaded and installed V4.0 and then when asked for a serial number, I entered the one from 3.7. Worked. One caveat... I purchased C1 prior to purchasing the M8, so my serial number is not the one that came on the set-up disk. Not sure if that will make a difference. Anyway, you could probably go ahead and do it, just to not delete V3.7 until V4 is working.

Yes it is. you have to download the trial version, actually the same as the pay for version, and when you start the program it will ask you "Do you want to demo it for 30 day or activate it. When you select Activate it you just type in the serial number, KEY code, from the CD sleeve of the version that came with your M8.

You will need a profile at the Phase One website to download it and to activate it.

I downloaded and activated the new software, but when I try to look at images (all images, not just raw files), all I get in the viewer is a triangle with an exclamation mark in it. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong? The beta version worked fine.

I run a Phase One back using the DB version of C1 and was confused over this issue. Phase clarified as follows:

QUOTE

1. Capture One PRO, this is the top version with all features.Works with Phase One backs and a vast range of DSLRs.

2. Capture One DB, same features as PRO however it only works with Phase One camera backs. This software is free of charge, can be installed on as many computers as you like and has a life time of free upgrades.

3. Capture One LE, so called limited version with basic features.

The version of Capture One that was just released is a LE version, now rebranded to be simply known as "Capture One", later a Capture One PRO 4 and Capture One DB 4 will also be released.

In the period mean while anyone that has a valid Capture One license regardless to which type can unlock Capture One 4.

UNQUOTE

Beta versions must be uninstalled first BTW.

Really guys DON'T BOTHER getting this software.

If you like using C1 3x then just keep using that.

The one big disapointment with this new version is that it drops folders and files all over your hard drive for it cache files and there is NO way to change this. Every image folder you open C1 V4 will create a new sub-folder inside that image folder called Capture(?) and then 2 more sub-folders under that one to store the cache file for that main image folder. No central cache folder lacation, Me NO USE THE SOFTWARE.

This is just total stupidity on Phase One.

I totally agree that this piece of software is a disk pig. If you point the browser at any directory with photo files, it drops a big subfolder in that directory. Not small either - I measured one at about 130Mb for a directory with about 1 Gig worth of files. It doesn't ask, it just moves into the spare bedroom like a no-good brother-in-law.

Lightroom is better in almost every respect except its inability to select an output profile for your image files. The only reason I can see for using this P.O.S. is if Lightroom chokes on a particular file and you want to try an alternative. If you do want to see what it does on a specific image, I would suggest copying the DNG into a new directory so it doesn't create support files for the 150 other images you are not interested in.

I really think these guys should concentrate on making their Phase One backs a little less expensive, and leave the code-monkey work to a company like Adobe that has the resources to hire interface designers with some taste.

Underwhelmed with this one.

I agree completely.

I'm quite dissapointed with the new version, including the fact it leaves quite large cache files all over the place. It also doesn't seem to allow you to archive and restore the settings for specific images so you have to keep all of them, even if you've deleted the relevant RAW files!!! With the previous version you could select only your 'keepers' and archive the settings for those files, and restore the settings to the cache if you needed to use the files again. This allowed you to keep, say 50 files, instead of the whole lot, possibly hundreds or thousands per job. The preview files are quite large so it's quite a bit of data to store if you don't want it.

Changing the GUI also sucks. I just don't like change for the sake of it. They could have kept the existing GUI and simply expanded it.

V4, at least in the LE beta form, seems to me to be a step back in some respects.

Bibble is starting to look good again.

It is difficult to see why Pase One have done this. They had masses of good and valid advice from loyal users following the release of the 2 betas. They simply ignored it all.

Of course C1 LE 3.77 still works fine on M8 files and that is what I will continue to use for the moment. But I very much doubt that I will stump up a large sum for the Pro version.

In fact I have just uninstalled the beta 2 and then spent some time removing all the Capture One folders left over. Several gigs I am sure.

With C1 LE you are allowed one major upgrade? I would not use it on V4.

I just hope that in the downloading of this POS program that we, as users, have not used up our one major upgrade. That would send me over the top.

Maybe they will come out with a update for this POS that does allow the moving of cache files to one specific location to be choosen by the user.

I did first Deactivate it before removing it. But If IIRC on there website when you are downloading, after signing in, it give you the number of upgrades left. My profile was listed as one remaining before I downloaded the POS V4. Not sure where the other got used as I think you are allowed 2 upgrades. Maybe the update from the version shipped with the M8 to the newest 3.7.7 was considered a upgrade.

This doesn't work for me! When I enter my C1 LE key in the Activation window it is acknowledged as correct by a display of green text stating 'Capture 1 3.7 LE'. So far so good.

When next, I enter my C1 profile email address and password, my personal profile details duly appear in the relevant fields of the Activation window. Still, so far so good.

When I click the 'Activation' button, the green text under the activation key becomes red text saying 'Could not activate because activation profile is incorrect' ... and that's as far as I can get.

Any ideas?

Try retyping in the key code. Other then that I would logon to the PO website and check your profile as to how many upgrades/dates are left on your profile. When I did that before the download and install It had 1 left. After the download and install it have 1 activation left for use of the program on another PC but no more upgrades/dates left.

People are beginning to suspect that all of the stuff that was in C1 LE v3.77 and has been left out of C1 v4 will still be in C1 v4 pro.

Could be a re-alignment of the product offerings. If that is the way it turns out then there is no 'free upgrade to the next version' for C1 LE users.

Jeff

I wouldn't doubt it.

For me the cost of the Pro version is just way to high, although I thought about getting it IF I liked the new V4. I could buy a second full copy of PS CS3 for just a little more and IF I go to this one PS class that is being offered by a local photo store/school I can get it at a student discount.

Actually I wonder what Leica will do with any new M series. Presumably 3.77 wont work. Most manufacturers offer their own RAW processor. Will that be C1 v4 for Leica?

Jeff

Well that will be in the future, and not in the near future.

In any event if Leica doesn't change file formats, still using DNG, then I don't think you will have a problem. Same goes for ACR.

Hi' Ed,

Thanks for the interesting tip. I tried this and discovered I appear to have no keys in my profile and therefore no gratis updates etc! Curious, but I will be mailing Phase One to resolve the situation. I'll post the outcome in due course in case others find themselves in the same pickle.

Seasons greetings to you and all our happy band of M8ers.

No ideas except exact same thing happened today to me.I still have 1 update available according to web-site so that is not the problem!

Seasons greetings to you and all our happy band of M8ers.

On the matter above I sent a support query to Phase One and within 5 minutes I had a reply!! It transpires I was using the wrong profile. Somehow I have created two profiles. The one I know I created uses my typical email and password combinations. The other profile uses another of my email addresses and a computer generated password, courtesy of Phase One. I don't think I realised this profile existed.

I am a bit of a duffer when it comes to computers, but if this has happened to me, I suspect there are a few others out there in the same dilemma.

Incidentally, the clear, succinct and very speedy response from Phase One worked just fine - I have successfully activated C4 as a free upgrade from LE 3.7.

Well that happened to me also. I used my main email address as the logon but when I originally tried ALL of the passwords I use for every dam thing I do on and off the net I kept getting incorrect password. I then hit the "I Forgot My Password" button and waited, and waited. Luckily I had the original email PO sent me when I created my profile and sure enough it had some computer generated password. I use that and everything went OK.

Oh how long did I wait for them to send me my password, well they were in my inbox when I got up this morning at 5:00AM.
