Dear all,

am looking for a 28mm for my LTM cameras.I have seen the Hektor and the Summaron available.

Does anyone here have any experience with either of them in terms of resolution and flare?

I have the opportunity to get the summaron reasonably priced (they seem to be very expensive) but have not seen any images or heard of any experience with them..all input welcome..especially regarding flare and contrast etc.

regards

andy

Yup, you are speaking of one of my favorites... the Summaron 28 has been, for years, my standard 28 on my M4 (and IIIc, before): I used it on M8 too, but given the uneasness to have a UVIR fitted onto it's quietly becoming a 2nd choice (it's A36... I have the adapter for E39 filter, but then the issue of hood arises...).

As I said, I liked it a lot, expecially for its fantastic compactness... I make a lot of mountaineering, and when it was into its black plastic case it could be carried into any pocket; for framing, I had both the "modern" 12007 and the "old" SUOOQ : I preferred the last, for it could rest permanently (folded) on M4 with std. leather case... another semplification.

As for performance : compared to other Leitz lenses of same age, ok, it was undoubtly a little softer, but without significant flare and a vignetting that was appreciable only at 5,6/8 : I used it almost always at f11 (isn't, of course, a lens for chasing "bokeh" effects). Let me say also that all those 3 factors were definitely better than in the Hektor 6,3 (which I have, and used before acquiring the Summaron, only in my "SM period"), which hase also a worst contrast. Let's say... the Hektor is a fine collectible... it's even smaller than the Summaron (hasn't the diaph setting ring, which is "Elmar style", round the front lens), but is uncoated (also the postwar items, which btw are more valued when have the "modern" aperture scale), and easy to find with some defect/wear in the glass.

A Summaron with good glass is, for me, a lens to use and enjoy... I would like to post some pic... but most of them are unscanned prints... :o (I have a number of nice 20x30)... I'll see if I have some M8 shot, but, of course, they are less significant to appreciate the possible vignetting which, imho, is the only issue that can be a little annoying if you use "wide" (relatively... :) ) apertures on this fine lens.

Gunnar and Luigi

many thanks for your inputs (lovely picture Gunnar).

I am leaning toward the Summaron, I love its compactness and will only use for landscape//cityscape shots.

In clean condition I see that they fetch very high prices over Euro 1000,00:eek:

I also looked at the CV but on my LTM I really only want the old look lenses.

Will keep you posted..

thanks

andy

Good choice, Andy... :) ... I quoted the CV, but I'm intimately of your idea...

In the meantime I found 3 M8 shots made with Summaron 28 : a portrait in interiors, a landscape, a family scene ... all three I think at f 8 or 11, the interiors surely at 640 ASA, probably at 160 the landscape (which was surely sharpened - UVIR on in the interiors).

Not any more.

But think, the hood SOOBK Andy. The hood !

Boris have one (with box) for $548

No surprise... the hood is rarer than the lens... and if boxed is a tasty collectible... the hood for the Hektor 2,8 f 6,3 (SOOHN) can be a valid alternative: shape is different, but the A36 attachment is the same: this good italian dealer has a pair of them : Newoldcamera - Prodotti

This is exactly what I have had and used for many years, mostly on my IIIg too.

Before you purchase this lens, it is really important to have a careful look at the glass. I have seen more than several of these lenses with slightly clouded glass when I lived in Tokyo. This seems to happen more often than with other vintage lenses.

Maybe JC or Luigi can give more detailed information.

Good luck in your search. I love the way this lens draws on film. Have not used it on the M8, where the 28/2 and the 28/2.8 asph. are usually in use.

Teddy
