Black Paint M4

Hello all

This is my first post here on this forum and I am new to the world of Leica. I am a pro photographer in Australia however I when shooting for myself, I like a break from digital cameras.

I have just purchased a IIIa which was relatively cheap. I wanted to see if Leica was for me. Well I think it is and I currently have the IIIa off getting a CLA. I am now looking to purchase an M3 or an M4 to shoot with. I have found a black paint M4 which is on the list of BP serial numbers ( 1 247 ***). It is in great condition but has brassing and a little chip of vulcinate off near the bottom plate (about 4mm diameter) but no dents. It was sent to Leica in Solms about a year ago for a going over (CLA) and it is butter smooth and quiet.

Now I am not specifically looking for a black M4 and I know I am going to pay a premium for the camera but it does seem like a good price. The seller wants US$1 900. I am thinking that I might be able to use it for a while and then sell, or add an M3 in about a year or so.

Does this sound like a good deal? Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the replys.

James, yes I want a shooter however I thought that if this one was exceptional value, I may be able to sell it in the future and retain, possible even make some money on it. I am not concerned about tying up the extra cash. I beleive that you never know how much something has cost you until you sell it. I guess I was trying to get an opinion as to whether this unit is worth $1900, or more, or less. Thanks.

Hi Tom!

My opinion: I would never pay anything for 'rareness', if I want a shooter. There is nothing that this camera will do better than any M2/3/4/5/6.

And collectors-market is very sensible! Lacking peace of Vulkanit would not bother me on a Leica for shooting, but may severely damage the price in the eyes of the collector. Nobody knows, if you will be able to sell the camera after some years of normal use at a reasonable price.

Another aspect: My cameras ARE worn (IIIf, M5, M6, some SL2s), but in good to perfect mechanical condition. I'm never afraid, if they will catch another scratch, because it will not really lower worth and what they are for me: instruments!

Best wishes from Cologne, Germany ('down under' ;) ) Lenn

Lenn:

I agree...wise words.

Two different worlds: collectors vs leica photo users.

A black paint M4 is a wonderful piece of gear and if it´s a >>genuine<< one, painted by LEITZ and within the official no.-range, the prize seems to be very fair.

But as a user- camera I would choose an M6 (or M6 TTL if you like the features) anytime. It´s so much more covenient to have a lightmeter in a camera.

That´s the least- luxury you should go for in case of a rangefinder- LEICA.

>> IT << is the M4 black paint I suppose. Enjoy the machine !

It has been serviced recently and should give you many, many years of service. Try to get hold of the CLA- bill. You might have a chance to get a free look at the camera in case something goes wrong.

A SOLMS- repair can set you back a few hundred dollars ...
