I have more or less given up trying to find an SNHOO Summitar lens to e39 filter adapter. S K Grimes have offered to make me one for a reasonable price ($65) but I have to tell them the exact specifications I need. The e39 side of the adapter is easy, as that is just a normal female parallel sided 39mm diameter x 0.5mm pitch thread. However does anyone know for certain, the correct technical specifications of the male tapered filter thread, which will screw onto the front of the Summitar 50. I need the maximum and minimum diameters, the thread pitch and the taper angle. I will also ask at Solms when I am there on next Monday, as one of the older guys might remember.

Hi Wilson,
When you meet with the Solms people, can you ask if Leica has an official name for the summitar filters, please? I read somewhere that they were designated as "L series filters", or some such. Just curious. thanks! rt ![]()

JC,
It is the other way round. I want to use an e39 on a Summitar lens. RT, Leica visit was a bit of a wash out. Stefan Daniel was not there when I arrived and apparently had "family problems". I therefore got the standard factory tour from a very pleasant young guy, Michael Agel from the press and PR department. I think any questions regarding the technical spec of a Summitar filer thread or an SNHOO adapter would have foxed him. Not sure where to try next. I might give Malcolm Taylor a ring. Wilson |

OK Wilson it was not enough clear for me in your inquiry, I have seen one of this adaptor on Ebay recently. I do not know if I have the gauge for this thread to check the pitch I will try to see tomorrow
for the minus maxi diameter of a Summitar filter we have 36.3mm 36.7mm

A Summitar type "A" filter should be inexpensive, I found one at a photo show for $2. You could purchase one and provide it to the machine shop. I took the glass out of the filter and made it into a Series VI filter holder.

Too bad S.K.Grimes doesn't keep the SNHOO plan in file. Suggest it, and warn them that a buhzillion LUF summitar users will be submitting orders very soon. rt ![]()

Carl Bretteville has told me he has just had a SNHOO made by Don Goldberg, so that is the route I will go. S K Grimes wanted a lens to check the fit. After an experience of sending a lens to the US from France for repair some years ago - never, ever again; reams of paperwork and they still tried to charge me duty, which I had to pay and reclaim, which took months.

By the way, are you going to have Mr. Goldberg cut a grove into it so the Leica clip-on lens hood would fit properly. Apparently, from reading a recent photonet thread, SK Grimes does this upon request: Leica 50mm f/2 Summitar lens M39 Screwmount - 1950 - Photo.net Leica and Rangefinders Forum rt ![]()

No, I am going to use a chrome Elmar-M 50/2.8 hood. Now I think this may vignette on film on my IIF but should be fine on an M8. For film, I will probably use a rubber B+W hood. The main purpose of this exercise is to be able to fit a UV/IR filter on the Summitar for use on the M8. I am looking for a gentler lens for portraits. The 50 ASPH Summilux is a touch on the hard/contrasty side for this purpose. The 75 Summarit is better but at an EFOV of 100mm on the M8, a bit on the long side. I will let you know how I get on. DAG has to find an old but good condition Summitar filter ring first. Wilson |

Ritz Collectibles has a bunch of Summitar filters, in case DAG is still looking. My recently purchased Summitar has just returned from an overhaul. I'll be trying it out on the M8, too. rt ![]()

Great job and good idea! But that's not "all I want". I can't speak for Wilson, but what I want is to be able to use my existing collection of 39mm filters on EACH and ALL of my 39mm lenses (summicrons, elmarit, ultron, apo-lanthar, and the SNHOO-equpped summitar, etc.). The SNHOO allows me to do that. And on the Summitar, I have the added benefit of also being able to use an inexpensive screw-in hood attached to either the filter or directly to the SNHOO. rt ![]()

Len,
As RT says, I want to play around with other filters and I too already have quite a few e39 ones. I also have an e39 to e52 adapter ring and a set of 52 mm IR B+W filters. With its creamy rendition, the Summitar might be an excellent lens to use for IR. It has the advantage of having an IR focusing mark. I also want to use an Elmar-M 50 chrome hood rather than my "barndoor", so I think that the DAG-SNHOO is the right answer for me. Wilson |
