wlaidlaw Posted April 5, 2008 Share #1 Posted April 5, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have more or less given up trying to find an SNHOO Summitar lens to e39 filter adapter. S K Grimes have offered to make me one for a reasonable price ($65) but I have to tell them the exact specifications I need. The e39 side of the adapter is easy, as that is just a normal female parallel sided 39mm diameter x 0.5mm pitch thread. However does anyone know for certain, the correct technical specifications of the male tapered filter thread, which will screw onto the front of the Summitar 50. I need the maximum and minimum diameters, the thread pitch and the taper angle. I will also ask at Solms when I am there on next Monday, as one of the older guys might remember. rtphotos Posted April 5, 2008 Share #2 Posted April 5, 2008 Hi Wilson, When you meet with the Solms people, can you ask if Leica has an official name for the summitar filters, please? I read somewhere that they were designated as "L series filters", or some such. Just curious. thanks! rt
jc_braconi Posted April 5, 2008 Share #3 Posted April 5, 2008 If you want to use Summitar filter on E39 lens you nee a SOOQR You can read the name of a yellow filter on the box Welcome, dear visitor! wlaidlaw Posted April 8, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted April 8, 2008 JC, It is the other way round. I want to use an e39 on a Summitar lens. RT, Leica visit was a bit of a wash out. Stefan Daniel was not there when I arrived and apparently had "family problems". I therefore got the standard factory tour from a very pleasant young guy, Michael Agel from the press and PR department. I think any questions regarding the technical spec of a Summitar filer thread or an SNHOO adapter would have foxed him. Not sure where to try next. I might give Malcolm Taylor a ring. jc_braconi Posted April 8, 2008 Share #5 Posted April 8, 2008 OK Wilson it was not enough clear for me in your inquiry, I have seen one of this adaptor on Ebay recently. I do not know if I have the gauge for this thread to check the pitch I will try to see tomorrow for the minus maxi diameter of a Summitar filter we have 36.3mm 36.7mm
summitar* Posted April 8, 2008 Share #6 Posted April 8, 2008 Hi JC, where did you get this information? I think the average diameter is 36.4mm and not 36.5mm but maybe I'm wrong. Regards, Michael

Regards, Michael As Wilson want to have a ring made I measured one Summitar filter with my caliper to have the heigth of the thread : 0,4 the minus maxi diameter of a Summitar filter thread is 36.3mm for the bottom of the thread, 36.7mm for the top of the thread. hoping to be enough clear. brianv Posted April 8, 2008 Share #8 Posted April 8, 2008 A Summitar type "A" filter should be inexpensive, I found one at a photo show for $2. You could purchase one and provide it to the machine shop. I took the glass out of the filter and made it into a Series VI filter holder. Wilson Thanks, Wilson. I'm sure the tour was interesting, though! Too bad S.K.Grimes doesn't keep the SNHOO plan in file. Suggest it, and warn them that a buhzillion LUF summitar users will be submitting orders very soon. rt
wlaidlaw Posted April 9, 2008 Author Share #10 Posted April 9, 2008 Carl Bretteville has told me he has just had a SNHOO made by Don Goldberg, so that is the route I will go. S K Grimes wanted a lens to check the fit. After an experience of sending a lens to the US from France for repair some years ago - never, ever again; reams of paperwork and they still tried to charge me duty, which I had to pay and reclaim, which took months. S K Grimes wanted a lens to check the fit. Good to hear that there are alternatives to getting a machined SNHOO copy. Please let us summitar users know how this goes. By the way, are you going to have Mr. Goldberg cut a grove into it so the Leica clip-on lens hood would fit properly. Apparently, from reading a recent photonet thread, SK Grimes does this upon request: Leica 50mm f/2 Summitar lens M39 Screwmount - 1950 - Photo.net Leica and Rangefinders Forum rt

Apparently, from reading a recent photonet thread, SK Grimes does this upon request: Leica 50mm f/2 Summitar lens M39 Screwmount - 1950 - Photo.net Leica and Rangefinders Forum rt RT, No, I am going to use a chrome Elmar-M 50/2.8 hood. Now I think this may vignette on film on my IIF but should be fine on an M8. For film, I will probably use a rubber B+W hood. The main purpose of this exercise is to be able to fit a UV/IR filter on the Summitar for use on the M8. I am looking for a gentler lens for portraits. The 50 ASPH Summilux is a touch on the hard/contrasty side for this purpose. The 75 Summarit is better but at an EFOV of 100mm on the M8, a bit on the long side. I will let you know how I get on. DAG has to find an old but good condition Summitar filter ring first. Wilson

Wilson I'm interested in knowing how this turns out. Do report back here and let us know the outcome. Ritz Collectibles has a bunch of Summitar filters, in case DAG is still looking. I'll be trying it out on the M8, too. rt You guys are still going about this the hard way if all you want is a UV/IR filter for the Summitar. The Summitar BW filters were made two ways. One has the glass held in place with a spanner type ring and the other has the glass held in with a press in ring. The glass in the spanner ring filter is exactly the same diameter as the glass in the Heliopan 39mm UV/IR filter. Just get the two filters and exchange the filter glass. It takes all of 15 minutes or so. The trick is finding the Summitar filter with the screw out ring. Don't try Ritz. I had them go through all of their Summitar filters and they are the press in type. Also don't use B+W UV/IR filters. I haven't been able to get the filter glass out. I have made two filters so far. It looks beautiful. Like this. Welcome, dear visitor! rtphotos Posted April 15, 2008 Share #15 Posted April 15, 2008 You guys are still going about this the hard way if all you want is a UV/IR filter for the Summitar. Hi Leonard, Great job and good idea! But that's not "all I want". I can't speak for Wilson, but what I want is to be able to use my existing collection of 39mm filters on EACH and ALL of my 39mm lenses (summicrons, elmarit, ultron, apo-lanthar, and the SNHOO-equpped summitar, etc.). The SNHOO allows me to do that. And on the Summitar, I have the added benefit of also being able to use an inexpensive screw-in hood attached to either the filter or directly to the SNHOO. rt

Since I already have a nice collection of Summitar filters, using my 39mm's isn't an issue. I also find that the Summicron 12585 hood locks in between the filter and the lens. I know Wilson has been looking for an adapter for awhile now. Good luck to both of you. Cheers, Len
wlaidlaw Posted April 15, 2008 Author Share #17 Posted April 15, 2008 Len, As RT says, I want to play around with other filters and I too already have quite a few e39 ones. I also have an e39 to e52 adapter ring and a set of 52 mm IR B+W filters. With its creamy rendition, the Summitar might be an excellent lens to use for IR. It has the advantage of having an IR focusing mark. I also want to use an Elmar-M 50 chrome hood rather than my "barndoor", so I think that the DAG-SNHOO is the right answer for me. Now that I have an M9 which has the IR filter on the sensor, I don't really need the SNHOO to use an IR filter with the Summitar on my M8. I most use the M8 with Visoflex nowadays.
