dkCambridgeshire Posted May 19, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 19, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Finally took the plunge and ordered an M5 today ... have been looking for one for months and although had seen a few wanted an example with box and paperwork and no dents ... then yesterday saw a 50 Jahr edition and although a bit over my budget decided to get it ... the 50 Jahr scarcity factor won me over and hope it might hold its value. Might consider a 1975 50mm Summicron to match it at a later date. Dunk
Advertisement Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 Hi dkCambridgeshire, Take a look here Leica M5 ordered today. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
thomas_schertel Posted May 20, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 20, 2007 I think that this is a good choice, because the body is a litlle bit larger than other M's, the wheel for the exposing times cranks over the body and the measuring area of the exposure meter is shown in the viewfinder. I hope you will use it, altough it is a 50 year-model. I am using a Leica M 5 since 17 years. yours Thomas
dkCambridgeshire Posted May 20, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted May 20, 2007 Yes Thomas, I will be using it ... looking forward to comparing it in use with my M6. Just hoping the meter is working ok ... should haver asked the vendor to check thee meter but there was no battery in the camera ... I have some PX625's and the MR9 adaptor Cheers Dunk

Guest menze_as Posted June 4, 2007 Share #5 Posted June 4, 2007 Hi, I would anyway give the camera away to make a check - it's an old piece, maybe it's no more light-proof, has dirt inside, and above all you do not know about metering and what sort of battery was last used. I've done it recently with my CL, and it was worth it. Greetings Astrid

peter55 Posted June 13, 2007 Share #7 Posted June 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I got my M5 last August along with a Summilux. I'm in the USA and I'm using Zinc Air Hearing Aid Batteries, 6 batteries for the price of a sandwich. My M5 is such a pleasure to use and it was made around 1973 making it only 34 years old. I picked it because it was the newest TTL Leica I could afford. I was desirous of a young rubberized shutter and to me 34 years was not so old. Now that I have my camera I have learned about it and I agree it is a very finely made camera and I expect it to last another 50 years or more. I want to add that the M5 is the most silent film camera I have ever used. The overhanging shutter speed dial is do convienent. I can always change my shutter speed and f/stop without taking my eye away from the viewfinder. Out of all my manual film cameras this is the only camera that has such advanced enginneering. Also the match needle' of light intensity and shutter speed is very intuitive. So easy to use. My Summilux 50mm f/1.4 wasmade around 1966 and it looks and works like it was made last year. So I'm very happy! The lens on some occasions exhibits such a natural lighting effect that none of my other lenses have ever given me. So it's special to me. Good luck with your M5! dkCambridgeshire Posted June 17, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted June 17, 2007 Finally got some pictures of the M5 and figured out how to post them ... The Summilux lens is an early 1961 model .. s/n 1884366 ... which I think proves it is the "new" 1961 design as distinct from the 1959/60 model which was based on the Summarit. luigi bertolotti Posted June 18, 2007 Share #9 Posted June 18, 2007 Wow ! I have Summilux 1.884.604 ! Funny to find two near brothers ! I use it for 12 years, now on M8... but, sorry, I am one of the people whose opinion about M5 is "great camera... a lot less fine than the other Ms..." Very nice, the 50th year anniversary M5 JAHRE or Jubilee is a R = Rare rarity grade Leica in my Identifying Leica Cameras book. My chrome M5 is also R rated. But I got mine to use and I do. But my 50 f/1.4 Summilux is the 1959-1961 version going by the serial numbers. I really like them both camera and lens.
