Hi all,

This is my first post to this forum, but I am member/poster of the manual focus, Nikon and Canon forums as well as a member of the original Internet Directory of Camera Collectors (IDCC).

I am a user/collector with many and varied interests. I have an M3 and a couple lenses 50 Summicron, 90mm Elmar and 135mm Hektor, as well as 35mm, 50mm and 90mm R-Summicrons I use on my Canon 5D digital.

This post is about a nice little Repro Summar macro lens I picked up recently:

It looks like there is a hand-engraved serial number on the inside rim.

The lens came with an LTM extension tube of 20mm in length.

It looks a little strange, but performs wonderfully on my Sony Nex 3. I haven't tried it on the Canon yet.

I have read some material from this forum and other places about the lens, but I was wondering if anyone could give me a hint as to the era that this dates to. I would also like to know if this particular example was most likely standard production, or some kind of protrotype

It came from the estate of the late Dr. Brian O'Brien. Dr. O'Brien was the inventor many important devices including the sun lamp, early night vision systems, cameras and lenses for photographing nuclear bomb tests. He also served as a member of the Air Force's Scientific Advisory Board, during which time he chaired a special ad hoc committee set up to reiview project Blue Book. He also tested many optical prototypes.

This is a really cool piece, but what I really need is good 35mm w/a!

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Cheers,

Paul

Welcome to the forum!! You have entered with an interesting item, surely well known to collectors more specialized than me... Anyway, the Micro and Repro Summar(s) is a breed of lenses that Leitz had in its product line for a long period : before and well after World War II ; my catalog of 1957 (general photo) lists the MICRO (not REPRO) Summar 24mmm f 4,5 (code SUMAN); the lens' mount surely was made in many variants depending on the usage they were destined to.

Time ago there was a thread about, in our German section : http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-kundenforum/23503-repro-summar.html

Hi Paul, Your Repro Summar is described in a 1970s issue of Leica Photography Magazine within an article titled, 'Leitz lenses for the Leicaflex and Leica ... Part 4 - by P Holm' page numbers 118 to 122. I have a photocopy of the article but it does not identify or give any clue as to the actual magazine issue.

When I did a search the following two back issues came up with the article title so maybe the 1971 magazine could be 'Part 4' ?

LeicaMagazines.com - Leica Fotografie Magazine 6 1970 Leitz Lenses Leicina Super Photokina

LeicaMagazines.com - Leica Fotografie 3 1971 Leitz Lenses, Color Photography, Portraits

Perhaps someone else can identify the actual magazine issue if they have some 1970 − 71 ish back issues.

My photocopy states, "Table 2 lists the Summar lenses with their range of applications when used with the focusing bellows. The Repro Summar f4.5 24mm is optically equivalent to the same macro lens of the same focal length and relative aperture. It is supplied as an accessory to the Reprovit (with a special adaptor to the Leica thread) "

Table 2 states the maximum enlargement (magnification) for both the 24mm f4.5 Summar and 24mm f4.5 Repro-Summar as 7:1 when used on the focusing bellows.

Another table shows the best performance magnifications for the Milar, Summar and Photar lenses; for 24mm and 25mm lenses the optimum magnifications are shown as 7:1 to over 16:1 - which I assume is for 24mm x 36mm format. The lenses are also usable on medium format and large format.

I have a 42mm Summar which shares this Leitz 24, 35, 42 50 adaptor - as the 42mm has an RMS thread it can also be used with the Photar Adaptor R

Best wishes

Thank you very much for all the valuable information! The 7:1 reproduction ratio informaiton is especially useful. I hope to be posting some images soon. Is it allowable to post images here which are made with Leitz lenses on non-Leitz cameras?

Thanks,

Paul
