I once read in a magazine ( cant find it now ) that around 1973 /74 if you brought a 800mm Lens you were given a volkswagon car as a promotion by a Camera store somewhere in USA , have any other collectors or forum members heard of this ?

Yes...I believe a Volkswagen Fox was the vehicle offered along with the lens.

This was a Leica USA promotion and the car was the Brazillian-made VW Fox.

A well known UK dealer has a Canon 800mm f8 telescope lens in Canon FL fitting in used stock and it is being sold with a 400mm which shares the same focusing tube ... cannot find any information on the performance characteristics of the Canon 800mm but as it is a 2 element it probably has similar characteristics to Leitz 2 element lenses.

I believe the 800mm is a triplet long-focus lens and that it does not share any parts with the 400 and 560 slide-focus long-focus lenses, which DO share the lens tube and pistol grip with each other.

I was referring to the Canon 800mm telescope lens ... not the Leitz ... The Canon FL lens combo. ie two lens heads and common focusing tube is for sale at Ffordes
