Hi

I have several hundred old family photos that I need to scan and several thousand 35mm slides that also need scanning.

I've seen some great reviews on the Epson Perfection V700 Photo flatbed scanner. Anyone using this or can you recommend something else?

I won't get the use of a film scanner as I rarely shoot film these days. Thanks in advance. Hope I posted this in the right area. :)

Hi Ian,

You have the reply in this thread.

A V700 is a good scanner for scanning old photos.

I purchased the V700 a month ago, and am very happy with the way it operates (easy) and produces images (excellent). Both scanning of photographs and negatives are very satisfactory.

But if you wish to only scan photographs, the V700 may be too much for you, and the lesser tiered Epsons will probably suffice. On the other hand, owning the V700 may lead you into shooting film. Having the lab develop negatives is inexpensive - the scanner is an excellent bridge to digitizing your film work for further processing.

I use a V700 mainly because of the wide range of materials I need to scan. I use 135 and 120 film, I have an archive of prints (mostly family) that have no matching negative, then there's the typical office documents that need to be scanned. I find the V700 to have excellent quality all around. It might not match a dedicated film scanner, but it costs a lot, lot less - and covers just about anything you might want to scan for an all-in-one solution. For the money, I'm quite happy. I further enhanced MF scanning via the betterscanning.com holder and ANR inserts. I'll likely pick up the 35mm holder when it's released as well.
