Nokton 50mm/1.1

I've been excitedly waiting for the new Voigtlander Nokton 50mm/1.1 lens to arrive, and today was my lucky day. I'm not completely sure, but I think that the Nokton is the first M mount lens faster than f/1.2 has ever been produced by anyone except the nice folks at Leica. The quality of construction is outstanding, and my initial impressions running the lens wide open on my Leica MP are very positive - more to come! Below is a photo of the Nokton on my MP. Not that heavy, but I guess I come from SLR's. I don't notice it any more than my 35 summarit over my shoulder but I do feel it a bit more when it's just resting on my neck.

I'm limited by the 1/1000s max on the M6 in the first shot, hence the overexposure.

Has anyone noticed how much like old Takumar barrels Voigtlander lenses look. I have a 75mm 2.5 Colour Heliar and the knurling on the focusing ring is identical to old Takumar lenses which I used to use with my Asahi Pentax SV

The comment on the lens barrel made me look at my Argus/Cosina STL1000 with its 50/1.8 Cosinon. It's typical of all-metal focus rings on Japanese SLR's from the 60s. That includes Konica, Pentax, and others. It's a good, comfortable design. I checked my Pentax 85/4.5 Ultra-Achromat and Konica 57/1.4.

This lens is similar in size to the other "super-Speed" F1.1 lenses. I've handled a couple of Nikkor 5cm F1.1's. That lens on a Nikon S2 felt like it was about 1/2 the weight of my Canon 50/0.95 on my Canon 7. I personally believe that Cosina brought out an F1.1 lens as no one else has introduced a 35mm full-frame F1.1 lens in fifty years. Same reason they brought out an F1.5 lens: everyone else went to F1.4. Even if most of those are closer to an actual measured F-Stop of F1.5.

Hi all, just got my Nokton 1.1 and did a few semi-formal tests and photos. I cannot reply for about a week due to house guests arriving in minutes. The first thing I did was put it on a good tripod and shot the DOF scale: focus was dead on at a little over three feet. While sharpness was noticably less than the ASPH Leicas, it was surprisingly good (I am shooting at 1.1).

I started stopping down and point of focus shifted rapidly. At f:\11 the focus shift was more or less about 50mm. While a problem close-up, not much of a problem at medium or greater distances. With clear sky and a bright sun it appears at medium f stops (eg.4, 5.6) to be pretty immune to flare - surprising. Corner/edge falloff is visible, but less so than some wideangle lenses.

All things considered I think I will be very happy with the lens as long as it is used for its intended purpose - it is a general use lens only in a pinch. regards to all, ron
