andym911 Posted January 26, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 26, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, have dusted off my V35 and am on the lookout for a good exposure meter.(previously used trial and error to get right exposure time) I have the color head which I will use for B&W and though about getting the Focometer. Currently they are fetching really high prices on ebay in Germany (over 100 Euro) and wondered if: 1.Does anyone have experience with the focometer and "is it worth it" 2.Any suggestions for an alternative? thanks for any comments/advice Andy
Advertisement Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Hi andym911, Take a look here Focometer. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
aesop Posted January 26, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 26, 2009 ...same here, Andy. Trusty V35's up and running again but my Focotimer is finally beginning to show its age after years of neglect and abuse. I am therefore on the lookout for either a replacement Focotimer or Focometer, but having never used the latter, I would appreciate some dispassionate input from those in the know before I decide which way to go. Thanks in advance.
leicamr Posted January 26, 2009 Share #3 Posted January 26, 2009 I have a focometer and it is really nice to use. Using the diffuser disc mounted under the lens of the V35 get you in the ball park, but I would always make a test strip based on the metered measurement. I also have a RH design timer meter. The measuring technique reduces the need for test strips. You measure the lightest and darkest areas of the negative and the contrast range is displayed by LED's. Very clever bit of kit. The latest version of it is can be viewed using the link below. Looking at the list price the focometer maybe the cheaper option. I also have a Stag meter timer. Stag used to manufacture the Focometer. Nova Darkroom - RH VC Analyser Pro I haven't used my dark room in years and have nearly packed it all up in recet years. But I am getting the urge to use my M7 and printing some black and white again. regards Mark
Michiel Fokkema Posted January 26, 2009 Share #4 Posted January 26, 2009 Hi, i have one and like it very much. You must however calibrate first. And all the lughts must be turnd out during meusuring. Also the red light. BUt it works as a charme. EUR100 is not expenisve. They used to go fro quit a lot more. Cheers, Michiel Fokkema
PeterIH Posted January 26, 2009 Share #5 Posted January 26, 2009 I use the Heiland splitgrade in combination with my V35. Highly recommended!!!! I also have the Philips PBA 1030 B/W analyser. In fact a simple spotmeter that works really well. I figured out how to use it with split grade techniqe by measuring the highlights and the shadows. Never try and error again. Cheers, Peter
kenneth Posted January 27, 2009 Share #6 Posted January 27, 2009 An excellent thread which I hope will develop as I am just about to start processing again after years of Kodachrome II. This processing bug is highly contagious and sweeping through the photographic community like a plague. Long may it last

andym911 Posted February 7, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted February 7, 2009 So a quick update.. I managed to get a brand new unused Focometer 2 from a forum member here.. Ok the price was higher than I originally expected to pay but it is complete with Original packaging and test negatives, very nice indeed. Tomorrow I finally have time to do my first prints in years with the v35.(with color head) Am using negs shot with my old elmar's first and using Multigrade Warmtone and will develop on Amaloco 6006.. keep you posted, hopefully I won't be dissappointed;) andy
