Hello,

I am looking for a new 28mm lens. I have the old (version 2) which delivers fantastic colours and is very sharp stopped down but I´d like to have one that is sharp wide open.

I have the latest 28mm lens for R cameras and ideally I would like an M lens that performs like that one (excellent on all apertures). I don´t need 2.0 so I guess the question is Elmarit version 4 or Elmarit ASPH.

Has any of you tried both? Which do you prefer?

Thanks,

Gunnar,

I once had the Elmarit version IV and a friend of mine has the new asph. Both are very good lenses, with the new one being notably more compact. Also, the new lens shows very high contrast, almost harsh at some points, and is bitingly sharp.

In my view, the version IV will perform much like your R 28mm lens. According to Puts, the version IV is a little better than the asph at full aperture, but I have never tested that myself. In normal use, both lenses seem very sharp at full aperture.

I have the 28mm Elmarit version IV and it is a very nice lens. I use it wide open all the time and it is sharp.

The new 28mm ASPH has too much contrast for my taste. My partner has the Zeiss ZM 28 2.8 and it is a fantastic lens, very sharp with medium-high contrast. I like it as much as I like mine, to be honest.

I have also the 28mm Elmarit version IV and it is indeed a very nice lens. I use it almost wide open it is sharp but some very small vignetting at 2,8 and when doing big enlargements (>30x40cm) you can see it when you're very critical. At f=4,0 it's in fact gone.

Here some examples, shot on Fomapan T200 with this Elmarit 2,8/28mm and a Yellow filter.

A very small vignetting is also on the new Summarit line lenses (2,5) but normally nobody take notice of these very small lens failures.

In fact a very low distortion from this lens, nice for architecture subjects.

Here you can see some Split Grade photo prints on MG IV.

Or this one on Fuji Neopan 400:

Even for a portrait not too bad :)

I can only advise: Save some money for this excellent lens!

Next week I am on the Photokina, maybe to test the new 1,4/21mm :)

Here an example of the new Summarit 2,5/75mm by the way.

Film ATP-Tech Pan from Rollei, a nice niche product from Gevaert in Belgium. Very high resolution film and developed with ATP-DC (made by SPUR, for Rollei-Maco). I think a good combination to keep the contrast of this Technical Pan film under control

I had a version IV that I was really pleased with. Sold it to get the Summicron for the extra stop. In comparing photos from both lenses, I saw little difference, so if 2.8 is fast enough, you will be more than pleased with the IV.

I'm going to put in a word for the new Elmarit ASPH. I bought mine in January this year and have been using it ever since on my M6. Wonderful lens, small, light, razor sharp at all apertures. And I really appreciate the fact that it has absolutely no rectilinear distortion. However, having previously owned a Konica Hexanon KM 28mm (which had an almost identical optical design to the version IV elmarit) I don't think you will be disppointed with that.
