Hello, what is your opinion of the R5? There is one avaible over here but I can´t try how it feels before deciding if I want to buy it.

How is reliability? I have tried the ´flex, SL, R3 and R4 before and preferred the older ones as they felt more "metal". :)

Thanks in advance,

Gunnar

I used one for a number of years.

No, it doesn't feel like an SL or SL2...but it never malfunctioned...as a user, it was great, even if not mystically rewarding the way an SL2 can be. It works well...it mounts Leica lenses...if the price is right, it's a good purchase.

I would rate it as the best R. have used R4's which had a few development bugs but the R5 ha had no problems. The R7 had an ISO setting which fell apart if it brushed anything and the R8 and 9 are big bulky and add nothing better to the image by film process. The R6 just add mechanical inaccuracy to the shutter. Of all the R's I worked with only the R5 remains.

I have the RE (R5 with fewer metering settings I believe), and I prefer my R4 because it has a slightly larger viewfinder magnification so the image is larger and easier to focus, especially with wide angle lenses. The standard focusing screen in the R4 is quite dark compared to the current screens so if you do buy an R4 instead then you should immediately buy a new screen. The screens for the RE-R7 also fit the R4. The RE/5 is a very compact and easy camera to use however I prefer the R8/9, in almost every way.

Thanks for the replies guys. The price is low so I think I´ll go for it.

Gunnar, if you go for it and need an owner's manual, I've got one. You pay postage and it's yours.

Thanks for your generous offer, I´ll get back to you if I buy the camera and the manual is missing. :)

Best,

Gunnar

I full disagree whit you!

In my opinion the R8/9 is the best R camera ever made.

It was not so bulky and big it was very good ergonomics who is diferent then older R cameras.

The viewfinder is great the best I know in 35mm and metering are very, very precise and sensible(from -4EV to 20EV) better then Canon EOS1.

So if you search one good R camera go for the R8/9 cameras now you can buy one for less more then one R5 and can aceppt the Digital Modul-R.

So you have the best of two worlds(digital and Film).

You've gotten lots of good advice so far.

Look through the SL2's viewfinder then see if you think it's better than the R5 I have no problem focussing the SL or SL2 quickly and accurately even with the 560mm f/6.8 and 1.4x APO-Extender, with the R bodies I have to hunt much more for accurate focus.

The R5 is a competent tool, the SL and SL2 are real Leicas. This is a HUGE difference. On the choice between the SL and SL2 (as others have suggested), things to consider include:

Lens choice. Any 2- or 3-cam lens will fit the SL2, there are some lenses (2- or 3-cam) that will not fit the SL because of mirror clearance problems. These lenses are mostly wide-angle or zoom. The wide-angle lenses are either model 15mm, the 2nd model 19mm, 24mm, 35mm Summilux-R. Zooms would be the current 35-70 f/4, 35-70 f/2.8, 21-35mm, 28-90mm, and the very old 80-200mm f/4.5 (don't confuse this with the current 80-200mm f/4). The current 50mm Summilux-R also has clearance problems with the SL, it might be because of a light baffle at the top of the mirror box. Un-modified, ROM lenses cannot be used on either the SL or SL2 but with slight modification to both the body and the lens, any lens without clearance problems can be used on the SL (not the SL2). 3rd-cam and ROM lenses can be changed to 3-cam.

In standard form, the SL has an all-microprism viewscreen, while the SL2 has a split-image focussing aid as well as the microprisms. A plain matte viewscreen was also available. Any of these viewscreens can be used in either body, it takes a competent repair technician to change the screens. My preference: the SL's microprism screen. If I used wide-angle lenses much I'd prefer the split-image screen. Both of my SL2 bodies have the microprism screen.

Viewfinder eyepiece diopter correction is easy with the SL2 because it uses the same lenses and holders the R cameras use. The SL's correction lenses are difficult to find and rather bulky. OTOH I have no problem seeing the SL's viewscreen clearly with no correction, but I need a +0.5 correction with the SL2 and any R body. I'm 55 years old.

The SL2's meter is much more sensitive in dim light. The SL2 is supposed to have shutter reliability problems at the highest speeds (which I've not seen in my SL2 bodies). I've also heard that modern lubricants prevent the problem.

The only thing I don't like about the SL and SL2 is that I can't use the DMR with these bodies.

Image quality with the DMR at ISO 400 leaves ISO 400 film in the dust. At ISO 100 I'll gladly use the SL or SL2 for the superior viewfinder.

Hello,

I´ve got Leica R4 and Leica R5. I read somewhere Leica R5 seemed to underexpose for 1/2EV. If I compare the metering on R4 and R5, they show the same values, but photos from Leica R5 generally seem to be a bit darker.

Does anybody have any experience with this? Is it true or is it just my imagination?:)Both cameras used with the same lenses and film.

Thank you very much for your advices.

Hi Leica R users :)

Been wanting to get back into 35mm film again.

I was all set on buying a used Leica R4 chrome with Vario Elmar 3.5, 28-70mm lens that was at a good price and the store and then saw they have some good Leica R5 Black :) ones in mint condition for sale. No lens but the body. (I already have a R50 Summicron 2.0.)

Should I get the R5 and then look for another lens or get the R4 with the lens?

I liked the simplicity of the R4 and heard the R5 is very close to it. Others on forums have sworn that the other R models are better- but they seem bigger and heavier.

Any views? What is a good lens for the R? I have a M 90mm 2.0 Summicron, (i know I cant use it on the R- but stocking up for M240 use later. :D) so wanted to know what other lenses would be good for the R? I do portraits and street urban photography. trying to decide between a 28mm or 35mm? Or go for a mid zoom? But been used to the big aperture!

Many thanks.

Update: Store also has a R5 with a Vario Elmar 35-70mm 3.5 lenses. Is this good or should I get a prime lens?

I've been reading about R Leicas here on the forum lately, and was inspired to complement my recent M3 purchase with an R4 (on order). Then picked up an R5 on Saturday for my girlfriend for her Birthday in a couple of weeks. (Think I might sneak a couple rolls through it before handing it over. heh heh )

Initially I ordered the R4 with the 28-70 -- the same one I think you saw. I read a few negatives about it on line, prompting me to go for the 35-70 instead. And the Summicron 50.
