I would be grateful for any advice please...

I have about 200 reels of undeveloped film which have been niggling at the back of my mind for 15 years!..I'm going to bite the bullet and develop the negatives (never done this before) and scan them.

Please can anyone recommend a scanner or even better, any where that would rent one to me,i doubt i'll use it again once i have worked my way through the film.

Thanks

Lucy

Lucy, is this 35mm sprocketed film?

I ask because I have a Pakon F235 scanner that I got used on eBay. They show up from time to time, although less frequently now than a few years ago.

This scanner can only scan 35mm or APS film but it scans an entire roll of 35mm in less than 5 minutes. It can take strips as small as two frames but the joy is how rapidly it does whole rolls.

It's only 2,000 by 3,000 dpi but very sharp and very good color correction.

You will need the software which isn't always offered by the seller since these are used lab scanners. If you ever get one and need the software, contact me and I can tell you where to purchase it since it's out of production.

I know this recommendation is off the beaten path but I think it's the best way to scan hundreds of rolls of film.

When you're done with it you will easily find a buyer to pass it on to.

Regards, Bill L.

On second thought, have you considered sending out the whole kaboodle for processing and scanning? No equipment to buy or lease...

Hello Bill, thankyou very much for your help. I am utterly new to this so i have somewhere to start now.

I haven't looked into having the film done for me as i imagine the cost would be fairly high. I will look into it now that you mention it, just to get an idea but i reckon buying a used scanner to resell and the neg developing gear from ebay would keep the price down. Also, and probably more costly, i have pushed the film 3 times. I can't imagine anyone being interested in the job!

Thanks very much.

Lucy:)

Hi Lucy,

sorry, the links below are in German, just to get a feeling for the price range:

Preisliste fr Nikon

Preise - Fotolabor Jan Kopp

Maybe one of the UK members can point you to a lab? Please be aware scanning yourself will also take a lot of your time. The scanners of a professional services should be operated by people who know their equipment, have no learning curve and should produce good results from the first scan.

200 films is a lot of work to devellop and to scan.

Because your films are 15 years old you might need to change the developping time.

Is it color or black and white. Black and white is more difficult to scan.

Depending how much time you have, and also what you want to do with the images, it may be better to farm this out.

Obviously it would be best to do one roll first to test the development time etc., but its not the job for a 1 hour lab. However a pro lab might come to some arrangement with you, for process and low res scans, maybe doing it in batches to spread the workload and cost.

If you wanted high res scans then it's probably best to do it yourself, as the labs charge considerably more in my experience, and 'high res' can mean anything!

Great, thanks for the thoughts which make sense and the links. So i am thinking about developing the negs myself, i should get pretty good at that after my first 100!..then farm out for the scanning in batches, good idea. I don't understand the hi or low res choices so thankyou for that forwarning for when i deal with a lab...I am realising it would take some time alone.

I'm grateful for the help..;)

I pushed the film 3x for all the film -i was heavily into grain!

It would be good to have some experienced help,,i could go to my local photo group and mention my plans;) but i think i'll have to give it a go myself and hope i can redeem any/some developing time errors in LR..

Most of the pictures are of my daughter when she was young and i'm looking forward to seeing them.

Thankyou for the very useful links,,the jobo system looks pretty serious, i was thinking of bidding for a 4 reel size tank..?! The chemicals arrived today, now i must find a firm to scan for me..i'm definately going that way now after looking at you tube demo's of neg scanning earlier which looks too complex and i'm rubbish at complex!

Thankyou very much.

...remember, s-l-o-w and steady until you get in the groove - and keep us posted on (heh, heh) developments, Lucy. Bonne chance!

Can I suggest then to expose and develop one or two test rolls with the same push stops? I messed up my first roll after a long development break due to lack of exercise and it might be preferred to lose one roll on images, which can be repeated. It will also help to calibrate the equipment.

Well, I guess it depends. Scanning can certainly be learned, I find especially scanning black-and-white films rather uncomplicated. I guess the question is, whether one would like to take scanning up as part of photography or whether scanning these images is a one-off project. I guess, in the latter case I wouldn't like to spend the time to learn it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Try the Canon CanoScan 8800F. When I replaced my old flat bed I checked around. The CanoScan 8800F had everything I wanted plus. Mounted or unmounted chromes, negatives, color or B&W, prints. Now here I've only used 4x6 size from my lab. You can do several different sizes; 35mm and medium format. The frames are included. I was wary of the low price, compared to my other scanner. Not to worry. Advances in technology have brought the prices down, the technology up.

Thankyou for the info.

I've just sent a lot of film to be processed and scanned, without the scanning, the price would be £300 cheaper, i had come around to thinking scanning would be rather a fiddle but as i now want to start using film perhaps i should think again and just have the film processed.

Thanks very much, i'll look at that scanner.
