My new Leica IIIC

Hello,

With the MP lovers expressing themselves lately, I thought it acceptable to launch a Barnack loving thread. I have always loved the Barnack Leicas, but until today I have only been an admirer. Now I am the proud and very pleased owner of a iiic. I know the iiif and iiig are the most desired Barnacks, but this iiic fit into my budget better than a iiif or iiig. Indeed I bought it as a shooter, not as a collectible, so the vulcanite is rather homely; but that is a rather cheap and easy fix. The rangefinder is clear and pleasing to use; my iiic has a precision and jewel-like feel to it. Though the film loading will take me a few rolls to master:) Any tips would be appreciated from you experienced Barnack model users.

Anyway I just wanted to share my delight...some shots soon.

Respectfully,

Thomas

Allan,

Thanks and, indeed, I believe it is happy to be utilized and appreciated!

Yes it is very much like my M except w/o the rear film door. So far I have found taking the lens off, making the shutter stay in its T position fully open, and removing the film take up spool, while feeding it back into the camera simultaneously with the film leader attached to it to be a decent way of loading the camera. But the Leica IIIc is tiny....and my fingers are thick and large.

Any recommedations on lenses for this IIIc?

Enjoy it's a great camera, I had one for 20 years with a Elmar 50 F3.5

If it helps you I have a image of a film cutting template here:

It should be possible to make a template from the above image.

I loved my IIIc it was one of the best cameras I ever owned, you'll have a lot of fun with it-

Hi Thomas,

if you can make that cutting mask from brass it will be a great help, an old original one

is even better.Loading the old Leicas takes a bit longer but not that much, after a few rolls

you´ll be used to it.

I use several old Barnacks as well, for serious shots of course, but at the same time it

is a real step back from everyday´s stress and hassle. The old lenses do not give you the same quality as the latest M lenses but they have their own charakter and are sharp if

you close them down.

To summarise, it is great using the old stuff, this was a good idea of you...

Cheers

Joachim

Hi Thomas,

Good choice, I wish I had a IIIc. I have a IIIa and posting some recent shots with a 1935 Summar - a fun lens, slightly too soft for some. An Elmar would definitely be better.

Thomas,

Congratulations on your new lllc. I think another forum member is about to buy a lllc.......the number of LTM users is growing all the time!

My lllf was my first Leica and its still my favourite camera, especially for street photography. Its so compact especially with a 3.5 5cm Elmar. I cut my film by guesstimate, loading isn't a problem but make sure the film engages on the sprockets properly. There is a method to load film without cutting it, using a thin plastic card like a membership card, to slip into the gap and then load the film in over it, then removing the card again.

Remember to keep the slow dial at 1/25 if not using the slower speeds (the top dial must be set to this speed before selecting any of the slower speeds as well).

Here's a shot taken on the lllf with a 1942 Elmar

Hi Thomas,

Here's the best loading tip I ever learned with my IIIa, the same could well apply to your IIIc. (See my improvised diagram) As others have mentioned, scissors work fine. I cut one or two rolls before I go out.

Cheers,

David
