martha Posted June 4, 2012 Share #1 Posted June 4, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have successfully downloaded Canson Infinity Baryta paper ICC profile to my desktop and to my laptop some months ago. I recently tried to download a C. .I. semi gloss satin (270) ICC profile to both computers. After download on laptop, right clicked and "install" option appeared: no problem! Did the same with desktop and no "install" option in drop down box. I "went around the barn at Microsoft Help" and they couldn't figure it out. Does anyone out there have a solution to this dilemma? (I hope that this is not an inappropriate request at this location.)

tobey bilek Posted June 5, 2012 Share #2 Posted June 5, 2012 I use a Mac and have forgotten most of PC , but I had a similar situation when I downloaded a new profile from my pro lab. It is just a text page I can not read with no installation instructions. I looked up where the .icc profiles are kept and put the new one there. Worked like a charm. It is buried inside photoshop somewhere. Use explorer to find your current .icc profiles.
martha Posted June 5, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted June 5, 2012 Thanks so much, Tobey, I'll try that. ( Microsoft expert had me try a "clean boot state," whatever that is, and it still didn't fix the problem.) Why, oh why did I become attached early on to PC and not Apple? Life is probably a lot simpler in that universe!
Jamie Roberts Posted June 5, 2012 Share #4 Posted June 5, 2012 Thanks so much, Tobey, I'll try that. ( Microsoft expert had me try a "clean boot state," whatever that is, and it still didn't fix the problem.) Why, oh why did I become attached early on to PC and not Apple? Life is probably a lot simpler in that universe! Martha, no, it's not. Trust me; I run both. But the big question is what are you trying to do? You installed the profile--"no problem"--then what? What is your dilemma? LOL Are you trying to print from Photoshop? From some other application? An ICC profile needs to be used in a program to work (typically Photoshop). If you install it, nothing *should* happen except the installation confirmation (right-click, then install, and you're done). Now, some *programs* look for ICC profiles in very weird places. But without more information on what you're trying to do, no-one will be able to help you.
martha Posted June 5, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted June 5, 2012 Hi, Jamie: thanks for your query. Let me reiterate perhaps more clearly....I downloaded the ICC profile from Cansoninfinity.com to my downloads folder. At that point, one is to right click on the downloaded profile and several options appear, the top one being "install." (One can also open, share, copy, delete, rename, etc.) the "install option is on my laptop Windows 7 but NOT at this time on my desktop windows 7. I HAVE successfully installed other manufacturer's ICC profiles on this desktop, including one for baryta paper from Canson. this seems to be a burp in my software somewhere. And, yes, I am trying to print through Photoshop, but since the profile is not fully installed, it does not appear on the menu for paper profiles in color management. andybarton Posted June 5, 2012 Share #6 Posted June 5, 2012 Windows 7 comes in a variety of flavours. Do you have the same one installed on both PCs? Dio you have the same permissions on both PCs?

martha Posted June 5, 2012 Author Share #8 Posted June 5, 2012 I tried running what's called a "clean boot" and was unsuccessful in troubleshooting the issue. I believe that there is a conflict between software happening in there, but am so unexpert that it is beyond me and, quite frankly, a little skittish about fooling around with msconfig.exe's and stuff like that. Perhaps it's time to lug it into Staples and get one of their techs to run a diagnostic.... I will give it a couple of days until I take it to a tech; so, if anything comes to mind, feel free to contribute your thoughts. (Please know that since this is not a Leica issue, per se, I am also feeling a little guilty about taking up your time and space.) Thanks again. I'm betting that the ICC profile didn't download properly, or was downloaded as part of a zipped file. Re-download the ICC file and take special note of the file extension. It should be .icc or .icm. If that doesn't work, before you take your machine in to be looked at, you can always send me the file and I can take a look at it. PM me if you want me to do that! 250swb Posted June 6, 2012 Share #10 Posted June 6, 2012 If the file won't install, perhaps because it is in a Zip file, can't you just save it, unpack it and copy and paste into the correct location? Steve

martha Posted June 6, 2012 Author Share #12 Posted June 6, 2012 Hi Jamie: Thanks for the information. It is, indeed, an ICC file, not a zip. The peculiar thing about this is that I have previously downloaded other ICC files from this site and other sites and when I go to download an already successfully installed file now and right click, the option to "install" is now not in the pop-down menu. This no "install" issue is a recent occurrence (within last month or so); there have been no major adjustments, additions or deletions from this desktop since I have been able to successfully install. I really think it is some burp) or belch that is creating a conflict and barring the "install" option from appearing. Since I am heading out of town for 5 days, this is an optimal time to take my machine over to Staples for a diagnostic. They tell me it will only be three days or so. At any rate, thanks for your continuing suggestions and help. I will post the solution (if found!) here when I retrieve my machine. The file, by the way, can be found on http://www.cansoninfinity.com and it is for an Epson 2880, photosatinpremiumRC 270. Oh, and this should be filed in the "for what it's worth" department: I was brunching this morning at our local and pretty famous Becky's Diner, looked up from my raisin french toast and spied Peter Turnley at an adjacent table. I, of course, being the boor that I am, introduced myself. He's in the state (Maine) doing a photo workshop and he was surrounded by camera wielding students. He is a very nice man, warm and outgoing.
250swb Posted June 6, 2012 Share #13 Posted June 6, 2012 Sure, but you should also be able to unzip it, and right-click to install it into the right place. Well if you want it, just how much work is that to do? Steve
martha Posted June 7, 2012 Author Share #14 Posted June 7, 2012 The latest supposition from a computer tech is that my machine has been infected with a virus. More information forthcoming, as it is revealed. Stay tuned....
wda Posted June 7, 2012 Share #15 Posted June 7, 2012 Assuming you maintain an anit-virus programme on both computers and it is updated daily, I suggest you identify your Downloads folder and re-examine the file type. If it won't respond to a right click, try copying it to the profile destination. (A search of other files ending in .icc or .icm will show you where to paste it. That is where PS looks when you elect to use a specific profile for printing) I doubt it is a virus issue otherwise you would have other symptoms of trouble. martha Posted June 12, 2012 Author Share #16 Posted June 12, 2012 David: Thank you for your reply. After some tracking down, I have been able to successfully install the elusive icc profile. I used your advice and tracked down the location from whence Photoshop retrieves successfully downloaded icc profiles; that is, the color control panel. So, in order to"install" the downloaded profile, I must manually do the following: control panel>color management>all profiles>add (the downloaded profile either from a folder or the desktop) and, voila, it is INSTALLED. Curiously, using the right click method I was able to install a Harmon profile. I then tried a Hahnemuhle and a Moab using right click (after unzipping) and the "install" option did not appear. Very strange.... Therefore, I am concluding that there is some weird software issue in my desktop. As long as I am able to manually put profiles in the profile destination as per your suggestion, there is joy. Thanks again, and thanks to all responded to this query.
