Advertisement Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Hi Venkman, Take a look here Lightroom 3 Beta released. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
delander † Posted October 22, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 22, 2009 I wonder what this means for M9 users who have downloaded the existing version. Does it mean that to get a decent profile for the M9 we will have to upgrade? Jeff
Venkman Posted October 22, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted October 22, 2009 That thought crossed my mind as well - not exactly regarding a profile, I think that might become available still in LR 2.6 or so, but for the general upgrade path. Some late adopters might get lucky and get the 3 version of Lightroom, or does it state "comes with Lightroom 2"? Dirk
stunsworth Posted October 22, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 22, 2009 The M9 doesn't come with a copy of Lightroom. They supply you with a download link and a serial number. Since I don't have an M9 I don't know if the software is hosted by Adobe or Leica - I'd suspect Adobe.
Mauribix Posted October 22, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 22, 2009 Some nice features IMO: The new "import" procedure (that used to be a hassle), The guesstimate aperture used with every single shot, The GREAT new noise reduction, it works like a charm to me. The preview speed (improved). Hopefully a new M9 profile is coming, now simply it isn't there.
Venkman Posted October 22, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted October 22, 2009 Give it time - it seems that they released the beta in a fairly early state (they mention it a couple of times through the videos) to gain feedback from the users on the features. I reckon that the "engine" specific work is done separate from the feature related work. Dirk
Guest stnami Posted October 22, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sure a bit faster but it is beta and doesn't have all the excess baggage................yet.
GMB Posted October 22, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 22, 2009 Some late adopters might get lucky and get the 3 version of Lightroom, or does it state "comes with Lightroom 2"? Dirk I think it will come with whatever LR version is available at the time, because once LR3 is out, LR2 will no longer be availbable -- but the M9 hopefully will still be sold;). When the M8 was shipped with C1, it actually included one upgrade to a new version (which I used to upgrade from 3.x to 4.x). Not sure whether that's also the case for the M9. In any event, for those who do not yet own a copy of LR, the smart thing would be to use LR3 beta and then use to the free LR to get LR3 when it is released. For those who already own LR2, use it until LR3 comes out and then use the free LR. I think you could also sell your LR that comes with the M9. Not really that smart. The release notes say that catalogues from the beta may not be compatible with the release version of the software - which is understandable since it's a beta and the internal structure of the catalogue may change between now and the final release. jplomley Posted October 22, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 22, 2009 Sure hope they make it pre-Intel compatible for the Mac.
stunsworth Posted October 22, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 22, 2009 Sure hope they make it pre-Intel compatible for the Mac. It isn't - also Leopard or Snow Leopard only. sandymc Posted October 22, 2009 Share #12 Posted October 22, 2009 The guesstimate aperture used with every single shot They got it wrong though. Looks like they're using the blue dot value, not the estimated aperture vale - same mistake Phase One made. Sandy
delander † Posted October 22, 2009 Share #13 Posted October 22, 2009 M9 users are allowed 2 downloads, so even if you have already downloaded the 2.5 ver you may be able to download the 3 version at a later date. I have downloaded the 2.5 file but not yet installed it as LR, I think I'll wait and a bit and see what happens. Jeff

Mauribix, yes it is in there and then is available from LR2 as well:) Possibly we may also get a Camera Standard' profile later as well (simulating camera default jpg settings). I've always found the Adobe Standard ones more useful though.

sandymc Posted October 26, 2009 Share #17 Posted October 26, 2009 Sandy, sorry for my ignorance about that, but what's the difference? Maurizio, as it turns out, I was slightly incorrect - the LR3 beta value is wrong, but not because its reading the wrong tag, it's wrong because LR3 is reading what is an tag encoded as an EV value as an f stop. So, e.g., if the tag value is 6.5 LR3 is showing the f stop as 6.5. But actually, the 6.5 is a EV value, so the f stop is actually 2^(6.5/2), or 9.2. I've communicated this to Adobe - hopefully it will be fixed in a subsequent version. Sandy
hoppyman Posted October 26, 2009 Share #18 Posted October 26, 2009 Can you please clarify this to me?I had to use Sandy's and make one on my own. If you install the LR3 beta or copy the profile from the installation package to the default location the new profile 'Adobe Standard' is available via the Calibration menu. LR will only show you the profiles that match your vcamera model. If you are developing an M9 DNG it is offering you Adobe Standard FOR AN M9. If you are developing an M8 DNG then it will offer you the option of Adobe standard FOR AN M8.
hoppyman Posted October 26, 2009 Share #19 Posted October 26, 2009 (edited) Maurizio, as it turns out, I was slightly incorrect - the LR3 beta value is wrong, but not because its reading the wrong tag, it's wrong because LR3 is reading what is an tag encoded as an EV value as an f stop. However as a practical matter I imported a sample of 100 M8 and M9 files with LR3 today to test this and compared the displayed value with my recalled actual aperture (shots from last couple of days). Anecdotally they are within 0.5~ 1.5 stops of actual aperture. Example: known exposed at f/2 reported as 2.5 consistently and f/4 as 2.5~5. I can provide recorded shutter speeds if you want to demolish my impressions with the math ;-) That may be due to limited shutter speed variation ont hese not adversely skewing the EV value???? My ancient analog brain is not processing your equation however. Edited October 26, 2009 by hoppyman

On the example I provided to Adobe, it was: Actual Aperture as shot: f/8 Leica Estimated Aperture from the MakerNotes: f/9.5 LR displayed aperture: f/6.5 CornerFix's estimate was f/8, btw.
