Is there anybody that can give me a good downloadable sample image so I can see what one can expect from the leica vlux 20, I' have read what limited reviews on this are, and find that generally speaking, not many here on the Leica forum have anything much to say at all? WHY is that? I no that it is no X1 by any standard but please does anybody no someone who is using this cam currently? please post. My wife likes the look of it and I told her too just hold on until I can get some real life answers too this cam. Sorry for posting off topic, but I need some answers fast my wife turns 26 next week and she likes it. go figure:eek: she see all my leica stuff.

Chris -

There has been a great deal of negative comments on the Forum about the V-Lux 20, all based on theoretical grounds, and none based on actually using the camera. The theory is that since there are so many megapixels and the sensor is so small, each pixel would be quite small and therefore less sensitive. The less sensitive the pixel, the greater the noise level.

That makes sense but without trying the camera to see if it has overcome that potential problem (perhaps via in-camera software) it's just armchair speculation. Perhaps you can go to a camera store where they will let you try the camera in the shop and see the results yourself, either on their computer, or if you bring your own SD card, on your computer when you get home. And don’t be afraid to do some post processing. Many of us find at least some post processing is helpful even with well exposed images on much more ambitious cameras, such as the digital Ms and the DMR.

BTW - further down this page is a thread about "bird blogs on V-Lux 20" which links to what the thread's initiator says is surprisingly better image quality than he expected. I can't comment on the blogs until I get home -- those sites are blocked here at work.

Stuart, thank you so much for making cence out of all this. Sometimes I can be and get cynical and just carry on about some thing that has no validity or evidence of (real) possibilities. I will check out the birds and btw my wife dosn't no or understand photography, but she nows that for the last 32 years of marriage, I've always used a Leica camera of some sort since I was introduced too a IIIc/f by my father in 1966. So she wants her own leica for her too carry every where , one that has a longer zoom. I know Panasonic has a clone for less $, what are the differences between the two other than the red dot? thats something I don't quite understand. How leica charges such a premium, I can understand a little premium for a red dot say maybe $100.00 for the name, but what other stuff do you get with the VLUX 20 than the red dot, for about 30% less?

thanks, chris m

In the past the differences between Leica and Panasonic models, other than cosmetics, has usually been, in the case of the Leica, longer warrantee, better s/w included in the package, slightly less aggressive default settings in the in-camera software, and a larger capacity SD card in the package. That SD card will probably still be too low in capacity, but perhaps not.

Hi Chris,

I just purchased a V-Lux 20 about 3 weeks ago and I love it.

I also have an M9 and a D-Lux 4. It is not an M9, but it comes close to a D-Lux 4.

If you go to my photo web page http://www.photosbystefano.com you will se a section with some

V-Lux 20 photos. The quality is quite nice. I blew those up to an A# size, and they look great!

This is a neat small camera that fills a gap in my photo equipment (IIIa, M4, M8.2, V-LUX 1, Canon 40D). You get what you can expect and quality is quite OK. Super portable, many functions and video & GPS are nice add-ons :)

Here some first random shots including a zoom series and some with build in flash. All at ISO 80 or 100.

MobileMe Gallery

I find it a great compact camera for those moments where you do not need super quality materials. I use it mainly for business events and everyday snapshots.

Cheers,

Lighthunter

Thanks so much, Lighthunter and everyone for the postings. I just order a V-Lux 20 from David at Dale and put my D-Lux 4 on eBay. I have been worried about the decision which was made primarily to get the zoom in a pocket camera. You have made my day! There are just those time when my M9 is just not needed. Glad to see this little jewel fills the void so well.

In print I'm pretty sure it's going to look good, at least up to A3 prints. I downloaded a couple of samples and I actually think they look better than the Panasonic samples I've seen. Might just have been the samples I saw though, but as it only shoots JPEG the processing really matters. Never really liked Panasonic JPEG processing..

Anyway, pixel peeping is dangerous.. When resized to 2590px wide it looks better than the Digilux 2 which was just fine for many uses and close to the Olympus E-1. Would have been great if they held down the pixel count..

Well, I've ordered one too . .I had a credit at Robert White and . I thought it might be fun to keep in a pocket when out riding. The samples I've seen look okay, and the long zoom and macro is tempting. It might be a good companion to an X1 (i.e. using the X1 for low light).

I will report back!

typo's,:p so sorry for the error's, but if you must know she is 16 years (YOUNGR), and I'm getting her into photography, she see's much better than I do, so now she wants an m9, but after reading here about more improvements that can be made, she will get an M10 after she proves to her self she really needs one.

She now has been enjoying the VLUX 20, and the prints A3-A4 that are coming out of this little gem are fantastic, better than the old D2 up too iso 400. So that said, you should buy one, the zoom alone is worth it.

Get her a d lux 4 , not too far off the price and a million times better in every way.

A million times better in what way? I and she really like the zoom on this little guy, and the files at the lower iso's are just as good in final out put or better than the D2 and D4 so why, I already own a X1 for low light which smokes a D4 away IMHO. The Vlux 20 has turned out to be an under estimated jewel of a camera.:)

NO! I'm a die hard Leica supporter for 40 years now and will continue to take my chances with Leica, why? because I can, and go any where I want to when I want, why? because I can.:)

Ps. I like the (not so aggressive processing) ie; The leica look that leica offers on board the VLUX 20 that the Pana dosn't offer, along with all the SW and warranty packages;). A very good over all value

Hi All,

So finally I received the V-LUX20 last night after a long wait for someone to fly from South Africa.

First Impressions: The build quality and feel is really good.It was late at night and did not manage to get samples done but the indoor samples that I did take looked fairly good to me.(I am not an expert photographer, who fully understands all the real technical positives or negatives)

If the photo looks great to me then I am happy.

I am hoping for some good weather to really take some decent samples and post them here for everyone to analyze and give their opinions.

I got this mainly for wife to use as she is interested in doing some street photography in Uganda.

What I do have to say is that I am glad I purchased this version, Photo Elements was a plus for me and obvious fact that it is a Leica.

It may not have justified the extra pricing in comparison to the Panasonic.I have not seen or used the Panasonic version so I have no comments on that.

Regards
