V-Lux 20 mad pixel density

I was really surprised, when Leica adopted V-Lux 20 from Pana. Have You seen, that it's measures are about D-Lux 4, but sensor is really P&S-crappy. Look at the pixel density (means noise and low sensitivity)

D-Lux 4 sensor: 1/1,63", 20Mpx/cm2

V-Lux 20 sensor: 1/2,33" 50 Mpix/cm2

For comparison, M9 pixel density is 2,1 MPix/cm2 and X1 has 3 Mpix/cm2

I really don't expect quality images from this cam.

Hi,

I just purchased a V-Lux 20 a week or so ago. If you go to my web site

www.photosbystefano.com and click on "Album 4" and them when the page loads click on"V-Lux 20: photos I have 3 B&W photos that I just took yesterday, Sunday May 9.

They were all converted to B&W from iPhoto "Adjust".

Only 1 photo has any sort of manipulation, and that's the one with the white horse.

The one of the sky and the stainless steel building/roof I also printed on an "A3" size Glossy Epson paper to almost full size, and I have to tell you, it is rather sharp.

By the way, I also own a D-Lux 4 and an M9 with a slew of lenses.

Obviously the V-Lux 20 is not the M9, but it holds up well against the D-Lux 4 and that optical zoom is absolutelly fantastic!, as is the extreme macro function.

And the portability can't be beat, especially for extended travel where weight is an issue, such as when I go for weeklong backpacking trips.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks for posting these pictures! I am considering the vlux 20 even though I have a D lux 4 and an original v lux that I really like. I see a lot of bashing of the v lux 20 here on LUF, all by people who have never seen one in person or tried one and this concerns me. Yours is the first review by a user and I appreciate your efforts!

I read many postings about the V-Lux 20 and I do not agree that is is bashing - most opinions sesult from pictures one can see on the web. And is seems to be a fact that the pic quality of the V-Lux 20 is not worth the price! The 3 pics shown here are very good and I like them, and also it is great that a user from the LUF made a little review - but the motives shown are very special. Under "normal" conditions what I saw on the web I was disappointed that Leica took that camera on their portfolio. The focus is small size, big zoom, GPS. Picture quality seems to be the 2nd thing, and that is not typical for Leica, it is more typical for the majority of the cams you can find in the price level of about 250 to 300 Euro in the big electronic markets. These cameras have many electronical tools and gadgets you do not need for serious photography. We hope that Leica will not going to that track when looking at the consumer cameras (Panaleica).

That is the point people are discussing here with -sure- a critical view.

Thanks for your response! Overall, I don't disagree with you and perhaps my term "bashing" was an unfortunate selection of terms. In considering the v lux 20 I value highly the input of members of LUF. I will be following carefully all input on this forum before deciding on the V lux 20 or other camera. I will admit that a Leica-worthy version of the Panasonic GF 1 Micro Four Thirds is what I was hoping Leica would introduce. I love my D Lux 4 and still shoot my M6 and M7 but after reading all the input on LUF, I am starting to share your concerns about Leica's market direction.

Maybe it only need some time by us "old Leica Fans" ;) to accept some new, and more "massmarket" oriented Cameras. After reading more about the V-Lux 20 here and outside the LUF I believe that the strategy of Leica is now going to be more wide spread. Sure they will continue the HiEnd lines like the S and M System. And I also hope they will bring out soon a fullformat EVIL camera! When one look at the market there is Ricoh, Samsung and now SONY on the market with special ubiqutous solutions. For the development of a Leica EVIL, they in Solms need not only capactiy, the need money. If V-Lux 20 and others can do that job it is ok. Let´s be optimistic.

Your points are very well made. It will be difficult for Leica to generate needed operating and product development capital by continuing to focus only on a small base of knowledgable, highly discerning enthusiasts. Perhaps a strategy of being the provider of the highest quality product in these new market segments will expand the base of appreciative consumers who truly understand what the red dot means.
