ryee3 Posted September 22, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone have suggestions regarding my 2 motor drives I use with my R4s that have intermittently fired in the past but now are completely not responding. I have checked new batteries for the motor drives, new batteries for the R4. The LEDs are lit in the R4 viewfinder, so I am assuming the electronics are okay in the R4s. I have double checked the batteries in the drives and camera and they are fully charged. In the past, I could nudge the motor drive and it would kick in. Now it is not making any noise. Is it time to retire the drives, send them to get fixed, or buy some used ones? If anyone knows how to jump start the drives, I can wait till Leica comes up with my rapid burst, non-autofocus, digital solution...

storybrown Posted September 23, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 23, 2009 Anytime I've had any trouble with the R4 motor drives, it's been the drive batteries (or contacts). After working, don't let the drives sit loaded for a length of time with batteries: they will drain. If you're sure about the batteries & contacts, have the drives looked at. I confess that I loved drive shooting for a while, but I've pretty much grown away from it on the R4sP - still use it sometimes on the R8.
wildlightphoto Posted September 23, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 23, 2009 It may be that the R4 body is due for a CLA service.
ryee3 Posted September 25, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted September 25, 2009 Thanks for all the comments. Please define CLA?
wildlightphoto Posted September 25, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 25, 2009 Please define CLA? Clean Lubricate Adjust and in the R4's case it includes new switches, which is probably the problem.
ryee3 Posted September 25, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted September 25, 2009 Where is the best place to CLA? NJ? or does someone recommend a private sector Leica repair person. It may be more cost effective to purchase a used motor drive?...:

Ask Don Goldberg or Sherry Krauter if they service this camera.

ryee3 Posted September 30, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted September 30, 2009 Don said that it's probably the motor drives. He suggested to send them in to him for a look. Thanks everyone for there comments and suggestions.
dkCambridgeshire Posted September 30, 2009 Share #10 Posted September 30, 2009 Before sending the drives away for a service try carefully cleaning all the visible electrical contacts with a proprietary switch cleaner available in most electronics hobby shops. And don't be surprised if it remedies the problem. Cheers dunk
