johnastovall Posted June 6, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 6, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm hunting for a ultra wide for my SL2 and my FF Canon gear. I considering the 1st generation Elmarit-R 19mm. The second gen is out of my budget. What kind of lens is it? Puts rather liked it. I think it will fit on the Canon to give me coverage under the 21 Distagon C/Y and over the EF 16mm MkII.
Advertisement Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Hi johnastovall, Take a look here Elmarit-R 19mm 1st generation?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Michiel Fokkema Posted June 6, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 6, 2009 It's big and the front element get scratched very easily but it sure is good enough for me. Best regards, Michiel Fokkema
andybarton Posted June 6, 2009 Share #3 Posted June 6, 2009 Great lens. I loved using mine on the DMR - until that front element got scratched... Here are some examples. You WILL need the hood... http://www.andybarton.com/2007/mediafiles/l82.jpg http://www.andybarton.com/2007/mediafiles/l1.jpg http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/landscape-travel/82995-tower-redux.html http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/landscape-travel/9303-tower.html
Overgaard Posted June 6, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 6, 2009 The hood is good. I haven't had any problems with mine using the hood all the time. I want the 2nd version for perfection but thought it would be better to wait and see what happens with the new R10 autofocus lenses. The first version does the job well enough thought the 2nd version is legendary. Here's some samples and text about it: leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Pages - Leica 19m Elmarit-R f/2.8 version I and II sample photos
adan Posted June 7, 2009 Share #5 Posted June 7, 2009 The original "dinner-plate" 19mm is contemporary with the pre-ASPH 21mm designed for the rangefinder Leicas, and very similar in performance: gentle macro-contrast, a hint less red-magenta (or more green-cyan) to the color rendering. Great for slides and digital, sometimes a bit muddy in flat light for neg films (IMHO - I have the 21 M). A Mandler lens, and a fairly early attempt by Leica at a Super-Wide retrofocus design (everything Leica sold prior to its introduction, M or R, that was wider than 28mm was a rented Schneider, Zeiss or Minolta design)

roguewave Posted June 8, 2009 Share #7 Posted June 8, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) John, I have both versions. They are my primary lens. Having seen much of your work on the forum, I believe the first version is more in harmony with your style, regardless of price. I almost always use the first version will any film. It remains tact sharp, but has a way with film that the second version can't render. Hard to put into words. It's not softer, maybe a bit smoother in transition in all the tonal values, less contrasty, which I think is a plus with film. This lens should have a hood, not just for "protection", but because it is so wide & you want to keep some of the stray light out. I have seen them for sale as low as $700 US & in very fine condition. BEWARE, this lens is not easy to use. It takes real effort to get the most from it. Just a hair off center and the world is awry. The results are plain to see. Get up real close and it's unique qualities shine. Good luck.
Verban Posted May 18, 2012 Share #8 Posted May 18, 2012 Hello everybody! I just bought Leica R 19mm (first version of this lens). I never had Leica lenses before and have couple questions. The aperture on my lens goes two clicks beyond f16 (which is supposed to be the smallest aperture). Is this normal or someone fiddled with the lens before and did not put it back together. Another thing which I find strange is that the focusing ring rotates beyond the shortest distance printed on the distance scale (0.5m / 20”). It turns beyond 0.5 m for approximately for the same distance as between Infinity and 0.5m. Is that normal as well? Thanks
bocaburger Posted May 18, 2012 Share #9 Posted May 18, 2012 Been a long time since I had that lens, but I don't recall it (or any other properly-functioning lens) having the aperture make two detents past minimum. OTOH just about every lens I know of focuses nearer than the shortest marked distance.
