geotrupede Posted March 22, 2009 Share #1 Posted March 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am looking for nice wide lenses for architectural shots. Distorsion is not an option... Have you got any example that shows the level of distorsion for the 12 and 15? Thanks G. Flickr: geotrupede's Photostream
Advertisement Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Hi geotrupede, Take a look here quality of 12 / 15 mm CV. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
giordano Posted March 22, 2009 Share #2 Posted March 22, 2009 Like almost all ultra-wide lenses these are not free of distortion, but I'd back the 12mm against any 12mm full-frame lens, and the barrel distortion on the 15mm is slight and not too hard to correct in post-processing. For detailed discussion and comparison with other lenses, see the article "Ultra-Wide RF Lenses" at www.reidreviews.com (subscription required but well worth it for this and many other very careful and detailed reviews). adan Posted March 22, 2009 Share #3 Posted March 22, 2009 Film or M8? I can post M8 examples with the 15.
geotrupede Posted March 22, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted March 22, 2009 Thanks for the quick answer! I am using film but a M8 sample would be great! Have you got anything with some nice parallel lines? Thanks G
adan Posted March 23, 2009 Share #5 Posted March 23, 2009 Well, first, here is the classic "brick wall". And I would say, after today's experience (and not to bring up the "live view" debate again) that an M rangefinder is NOT the easiest camera to shoot architecture with, even if the lens is good. It is very tough to square things up - left, right, up, down, horizon. And without the "shift" capabilities of a view camera or T/S SLR lens, you are at the mercy of the available shooting location. If you cannot get high enough, you either get a lot og keystoning /\ to the buildings, or a lot of dead foreground. But if you can work around the CAMERA'S limitations, here's what the lens can do: A little bit of "handle-bar moustache" distortion - barrel distortion flattening out at the edges. About half a brick's worth in that top row. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! adan Posted March 23, 2009 Share #6 Posted March 23, 2009 Had to crop this one square to get rid of a lot of street. Welcome, dear visitor! adan Posted March 23, 2009 Share #8 Posted March 23, 2009 This is one I did in Puerto Vallarta last Dec. A LOT of Photoshop correction for tilt-shift, but none for curved (barrel, pincushion) distortion. Welcome, dear visitor! adan Posted March 23, 2009 Share #9 Posted March 23, 2009 And one last from today - vertical, with at least a decent foreground and higher elevation. Welcome, dear visitor! geotrupede Posted March 23, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted March 23, 2009 Adam, thank you very much for all the posts, your images are really convincing! I am sold completely with it :-) I hope to have the same set of skills to get the right framing and composition. Last thing, in a M8 the 15 becomes more of a 20, is this correct? Thank you again G. adan Posted March 23, 2009 Share #11 Posted March 23, 2009 Yep. 20mm.
delander † Posted March 23, 2009 Share #12 Posted March 23, 2009 And here is one from the CV12mm. Great lens, a bit more expensive than the 15mm, very good at straight lines. I use this uncoded as here. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! geotrupede Posted March 23, 2009 Author Share #13 Posted March 23, 2009 Very nice! I think 12 is really what I would like. In the past I used the Nikon 10.5 a lot because of the field of view. I loved the fisheye but I had some bad reviews from my boss, who does not like curved geometries... I think it would be nice to try a non fisheye wide so to make all happy. CV lenses are really good and also affordable! G.
geotrupede Posted August 1, 2009 Author Share #14 Posted August 1, 2009 finally, birthday approaching, I went to the shop and got a 15mm. very nice silver finish and very convenient price (used). will post pictures as soon as I have a keeper :-) Thanks! LeicaMSeattle Posted August 5, 2009 Share #15 Posted August 5, 2009 I've owned the 12mm and ended up selling it to buy the 15mm version II where it has become my standard lens when I head out to the construction meetings. The ability to focus precisely makes this lens worth the money. As one of the project architects I record the week's progress for the school district superintendant (our client) after each construction meeting. Here are a few of my shots from today shot entirely with the 15mm, handheld with no post processing. Welcome, dear visitor!
