Guest Lotw Posted March 11, 2009 Share #1 Posted March 11, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone know what this figure 07 means? My other lenses (recent 28 S'cron and 35 S'lux) have no such thing
Advertisement Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Hi Guest Lotw, Take a look here Figures on 90 S'cron 90 Apo, SAA. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
UliWer Posted March 11, 2009 Share #2 Posted March 11, 2009 (edited) Unfortunately i don't find a thread about this topic in English. In german you find something here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-kundenforum/13447-gravur-der-skala.html#post139930 The little numbers indicate the real focal length of the lenses. So the "07" says your Apo-Summicron has 90,7 mm. If you look in the data-sheet of your lenses you will find the exact focal length. The numbers are only on lenses of 50 mm or longer, not on wide-angles (though their real focal length may differ as well). adan Posted March 12, 2009 Share #4 Posted March 12, 2009 Long lenses have such critical depth-of-field/focusing that Leica needs to know the exact focal length for servicing and collimation. I think there are about 6-7 "flavors" of 50mm. My 90 Tele-Elmarit is an "00" (dead-on 90.0mm) The rangefinder accuracy has so much overkill for wide-angle lenses that exact focal length isn't an issue. budrichard Posted March 12, 2009 Share #5 Posted March 12, 2009 Well you learn something every day! Never noticed the little '09' on my 90mm ASPH! Nothing on my 75mm ASPH.-Dick
ho_co Posted March 12, 2009 Share #6 Posted March 12, 2009 It's something that Leica used to do on all longer M lenses, but has I believe dropped from the 75 mm and 90 mm Summarits. (After all, they already share a focusing helicoid, so the external information is no longer necessary.) From 50 mm upward it was necessary to match a lens head with a specific helicoid. On the DR Summicron (and maybe other Summicron 50s), Leica would sometimes also scratch the serial number of the lens head on the front side of the focusing mount. There's a lot of history in those two digits! It's amazing how many people never notice them.
