Guest breverl Posted December 20, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 20, 2008 Has anyone tried the new 24 mm f/3.8? It is priced a full $1000.00 less than the 24 mm f/2.8. Please any comments on either lens. Thanks ...I tried to buy the new one with this 300 Euro less offer, but did not get any reply from Leica, so I bought now the 2.8 asph. ... nice lens regards roland
Ivar B Posted December 20, 2008 Share #3 Posted December 20, 2008 Erwin Puts has tested the new 3.8 quite extensively: Home It may appear that it is in most respects similar to the 2.8/24, and that lens is one of the best lenses in the entire Leica M stable. hoppyman Posted January 15, 2009 Share #4 Posted January 15, 2009 I got one! In fact the first to arrive in Australia, I think. On first shots it looks superb. Of course the quality of the Elmarit is already widely (and justly) praised. I used that one for a couple of weeks and was thrilled with its output. Yosemite Valley, first snow December 08 Soft light during falling snow On form factor the Elmar is a wonderful compact package. 46mm filter thread means I can use the Universal Pol, neat little metal screw on hood (supplied) is an excellent design and adds very little bulk. Very short and smooth focus throw with a tab. My favourite kind for a wide. On price, owing to discounting and rebates you can actually buy the Elmarit for LESS money in Australia right now, which is extraordinary. I opted to get the Elmar for its equal image quality but in a more compact package. Of course it is a slower lens, but I mind that not at all. I have a Summicron 28 if I need more speed there. On my first indoor mixed lighting test grab shots with the new lens I saw no visible vignetting wide open on the M8 and really neutral blacks although I had no UV/IR on it then. Elmar M 3.8 24 test2 I'm still trying to figure that one out! Current firmware recognises this lens just fine. Different coding to the Elmarit so there is more correction going on than just for 24mm. NZDavid Posted January 15, 2009 Share #5 Posted January 15, 2009 I can only say the 2.8/24 ASPH is a superlative lens. If the only difference with the 3.8 is less than a stop and $1,000 it's a terrific piece of glass -- go for it!
